I just picked up a new black Kershaw Avalanche and the thumb stud is ruining an otherwise excellent knife.
Has anyone sucessfully removed theirs?, the stud not the thumb.

The tip of your thumb will toughen up in time. Seriously. Just gradually "play" with the knife and the Kershaw and most other thumb studs will be a breeze to open.

Compulsively flip the knife open and closed for a few days and everything will be fine. Your thumb will eventually get used to it. I went through the same thing when I first got my Ricochet, felt like the darn thumbstud had taken all the skin off my thumb, and it got to the point where I couldn't even open it anymore. Of course I cycled the knife about a thousand times in well under a week (speedsafe is addictive) which is kinda excessive, but it really helped with my technique and after my thumb stopped being numb I could open it without any discomfort. I think the key is to push more forwards than out, play with the knife a lot and you'll find what works best.

The action is definitely foward, not out. All you have to do is slide your thumb forward a little against the stud, it should never need to leave the handle. I find them almost easier to open left handed with my middle finger.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Whirlwind but it is a decent utility knife.

Cheers

I have no problem whatsoever with my Random Task, worked great from day one.
