The Time I Wished I Had a Different Blade On Me...

This occurred to me earlier today when I went off and left my EDC and only had a small blade with me. I was in a basement with a ton of boxes I was cutting up and my little 3-incher just wasn't pulling it. (I was emptying the boxes and then pushing the flaps in so that the box was only a box. Alas, the flaps of most of the boxes were too long and needed shortening before they could fold in.)

I've also walked out without my larger knife and then realized I wasn't in the best part of town on a few occasions, bein' out a bit later than I planned.

Can't say I've ever wished for a smaller knife since I usually carry one. Lately, I've been carrying a 6-inch Cold Steel Ti-Lite, which has really grown on me.

What about you? Have you ever wished you'd had a longer blade, one with more belly, less belly, smaller, larger, shorter?

Not really. I carry a pretty large assortment so I can match knife to task.

Yes, large folders work better for me. I alternate between a Vaquero Grande and Voyager X2. My "small" back up is a Spyderco Military.

I prefer not carrying multiple knives.

So for me, I've had the situations where I wished I has a plain blade or a serrated blade.

Sometimes I wish I'd brought my Victorinox with me, to use on screws.
That's it actually, I don't really see a difference in blade size or style for the occasionally times I need a knife. Which is mostly indoors to open packaging.

Nah, but I have wished for more tip a couple of times when carrying the Lava.
Usually I carry the CQC-12 or the Military, or the Resistor, so I'm "knifed up" enoough for most tasks.:)

I'm always folding in the flaps to strengthen them for stuffing. Little trick I learned is to fold in the longer flaps and keep the shorter ones out. That way, you can use the shorter ones as pseudo-handles when you have to carry.

I usually carry the 4" ti-lite. I think the 6" is little bit huge, you know? like a pocket sword. But I understand your situation with being out late in a rough area. My school is located on the downtown east side, which is not the greatest where I come from. So I usually like to keep the size of the knife that I'm carrying with me around a four inch blade. This seems to be what I'm most comfortable with.
p.s. looking forward to receiving my Gerber Applegate Combat folder.

Nope. I've never needed anything larger than what I carry, an Old Timer or Hunters Scalpel.

Sometimes I have wished for a sharper knife though - I'm not as diligent about sharpening as I should be.

Normally I carry one serrated, one plain (Military/SMF), and a little LadyBug Salt for those in awkward 4" blade moments.

However, sometimes when I go to work and realize we're getting a shipment of whatever I'll wish I had my Superhawk.

After many years of rotating a variety of blades - Benchmade, Spyderco, Microtech, Kershaw, MOD - I have finally settled on the Military.

It's just always there, even after a number of new knives.

You can't beat CPM D2, FFG, and a great blade shape/size.

Hey Belly, off-topic, but how is Primanti Brothers? Seems like kind of a strange combination to shove a handful of fries into a sandwich.

As to the topic at-hand, I like to switch up my knives depending on what I'm going to be doing for the day. If it's just a standard day, I'll carry a sodbuster. Work days require a sheepsfoot blade, and the rest of my blades come and go depending on how I feel.

I was out on a controlled fire once and we had to cut the rubber seal on some 45 gallon drums for helicopter fuel. Usually fairly well prepared, I realized all I had for a knife was my Victorinox classic on my key chain. The knife cut the seals fine but I had a few funny looks from others.

I now pack a Delica on my key chain as well as a classic.

I carry what I think the day will need. If I am doing install work, I make sure I have a beater with me. If I am doing more office work, I keep it more light weight. Some days I like my moose no matter where I go.
