I don't think there are any threads like this. I apologize ahead of time if I'm mistaken.

What knife have you bought and sold recently? Or maybe you recently bought it and are about to sell it for whatever reason. In any case, it's come into your hands and you can't find a good enough reason for it to stay. I know many of us have done this with too many knives to count. If that's you're situation, then just start with the ones you're currently getting ready to sell. If you'd like, give a little explanation as to why it didn't seem to work out for you.

I recently bought a Cold Steel Spartan. I must say, this appears to be a very high quality knife for the money. I was never attracted to the way it looked online, but it really does seem like a nice knife, all things considered. This knife looks and feels incredibly tough. As a fighting folder, this knife may be one of best that I can think of for urban carry, assuming it's legal in your area. AUS8A is a fine steel for any use. But for SD, it may very well be ideal. The steel is cheap enough to keep the cost down, it takes an incredibly sharp edge and edge retention isn't really that much of a concern for something that is statistically not going to happen very often, if at all.

Why am I getting rid of it? I only really bought it to see what it was like and there was a great deal (thanks joebobx!) in the for sale section. I also have some friends that have been asking me about knives. I told them if I came across any deals, I'd go ahead and buy the knife and see if they wanted to buy it from me at cost. If none of my friends want it, I may very well keep it, but as far as I can tell, it's going to be sold. Even if I kept it, I'm not sure what I'd do with it. It's a little too big for EDC for me. Anyway, here are a couple of crappy pics:

People like to say that the XM-18 is a "tank", well here it is next to the "large" XM-18:

I recently bought the Spartan too. I agree it's a stout well made knife and for the money a bargain. (the fact that it will hold near 500 pounds on it's handle locked open is what convinced me to buy one) It's just too bulky to fit any belt sheath I have and it's a real pocket full clipped.
But, I won't be getting rid of mine. I'll put up with it taking up my jeans pocket on long hikes just because it's a mighty comforting item to have along.
The grip is outstanding and the design formidable. It pops open with a snap and feels solid. It's a keeper and a real bargain. No need to get rid of it, it was too cheap to even worry about the money involved to own it. Even if it is rather impractical.

I have expensive knives and still enjoy well made inexpensive knives. I put my Buck Mayo TNT away because I picked up a Buck Vantage. I stopped EDCing a high end stockman for a $19.00 SAK. I like all well made knives no matter what they cost...;)

I have transient knives because I give them away. Everyone needs a knife or two and they make excellent presents to people who have done favors but won't take cash. Nothing fancy, just your standard low dollar, good value stuff; Mora, Opinel, Rough Riders. I don't spend a lot of money, but I do build a lot of good will.

I don't like owning knives that I don't think I am ever going to use. I like all of the knives I own to have an eventual purpose, even if it is not going to be used for said purpose for some time to come.

That being said, I currently have a few knives in transition. One, which is up on eBay right now, is a Cold Steel UWK in Carbon V. I bought this knife to essentially be a self defense, combat knife to wear inverted on the strap of my hiking backpack. I've yet to use it, but I have gotten so burnt out on Cold Steel lately that I just want to be rid of thing, despite how much I like it. The idea is to sell it for a Becker BK7, a superior knife to just about anything Cold Steel has to offer.

Right now I am also selling a Cold Steel Kopis Machete on eBay. I bought this simply to sell it. I also plan on selling a factory 2nd Cold Steel 1917 Cutlass that I bought because I thought owning a sword would be cool. But, like I just said, if I don't have a purpose for a knife, I hate to own it, so it will be the next one up for sale. After that, probably my Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. Again, I thought it would be nice to have this solid folder, but I now see the knife as totally impractical considering the steel being used.

I didn't really realize until now that all of my "transient knives" were Cold Steel. I guess I bought into a lot of the Cold Steel hype a while back. Save for their machetes, a tomahawk and their shovel, I just don't see what they have over knives like Becker, or some of the others that KA-BAR offers, so off they go onto someone who will hopefully appreciate them more than I do.

Jill? Why is it important that the Spartan will hold 500 pounds on it's handle? I'm just curious is all. Thank you and I hope you have an excellent weekend.

if you know something will hold 500lbs of force, then you won't be concerned about a 250lb force

I bought a Benchmade 520 Presidio a while back that I've been thinking about getting rid of

I don't use it, basically, and my rule of thumb is that any knife that doesn't get used gets sold eventually...

what got you interested in cold steel if you were already into knives like the XM-18?

My guess would be the sheer size of the knife, and the cool factor

Pretty much what enderwiggin said. I appreciate knives from all price points. Going into the higher price range only causes your taste to drive you quicker toward bankruptcy and on top of that, the "lower" priced knives still tend to appeal to me just as much. If you think getting a $400+ knife will be the end of you wanting all the knives you still want today, chances are you're fooling yourself. I know some folks once they get the more expensive knives, they tend to stay with them. For a while, customs were all I was looking into. But the production knife companies just keep outdoing themselves. I'm pretty much screwed.

This knife has excellent self defense capabilities. If I am carrying a knife to back up my pistol in the event that I have to use it to defend my life, a very strong lock in my opinion is important. It increases my confidence to be able to use the knife in any manner without fear it will fail and injure me.

most members are probably not aware that jill jackson lives in the boonies & doe'st know what she might meet walking her dogs . my brother wears a super lite wt. 38 everyday on his ranch. i admit you are more likely to have trouble in city but one of my worst butt beatings occured on a river. nowadays if i'm in boonies by myself i take a little berretta 22 short in pocket. do'nt laugh, with winchester super x this is enough for a dog or human. one of the most effective professionals in world carried this tiny for covert city work.of course one should carry a decent blade or two. getting off subject again, so easy to do, sorry.

Cant say I do this.Ibuy all my knives with the intention of keeping them. If I dont keep em its usually for unforseen reasons or I need cash to get something that would replace the blade.

Cool. Thank you for answering Jill. I was just curious is all. You've mentioned the 500 lb. thing before also. What type of pistol do you take with you?

I like revolvers a bit better than autos, so I go with one of these, all are .357 mags but the last which is a .38.

I'm an automatic kind of guy. Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 or my Beretta Mini Cougar in 9mm. I wouldn't mind having a small revolver for backup though. Nice looking guns, Jill.

I can't think of any knives I own that I don't like , but whenever I accumulate a bunch that will probably never get used and they're not sentimental, I sell them. Believe it not out of all the knives I've sold the only one I would buy again is a CRKT M16 Big Dog. It's the only one I miss, the rest I've completely forgotten about.
