I have had A remington 1178 bullet trapper from 1991 and a schrade classic trapper since beginning of the 2000ds. I have considered them good knifes but heavy and big, and, in the schrade also unbalansed between the size of the handle and the sturdyness of the blades. Flexing blades with the weight of over 4 ibs dont realy match in my mind. I dont like the long spay eather but that have been made clips on the grindingwheel. So beside some light ecd carry and fondling infront of the TV they have been unused.
This summer a package with a gift from SunnyD arrived. It contained the most perfect edc i have tested so far. A medium carbon steel and bonehandle Case stockman, and a case trapper mod 54. The stockman emidiatly got my all time favorit and the Trapper started to ley around with the other two trappers.
Its a beautiful knife with reed bone and truesharp blades. I got some bad feelings about not honoring this gift by using it so the first week of september, premier of moosehunt I desided that although I most wanted to bring the new stockman I instead should carry the trapper. It felt a little big and heavy in the pocket but the blades was nearly not flexing at all and I have to admit that the construction is well balansed, nearly oversized to give a strong working knife. After the week I used the grinding wheel also on this trapper as I cant grow to like the long spay with a dull point. The true sharp blades dont darken and that is a little pity on a traditional but also makes it very outdoor friendly together with the stainless backsprings. The steel was a good surprice, I didnt expect to much after reeding about it in different forums but its a realy nice steel. Deasent edgeholding and ability to get realy sharp.
I will say that I can see why the trapper was developed to a popular pattern in a world a little different than today. Its a great pattern for nature and worktasks such as farming. Its things that need a good and not to small knife and In those areas you are willing to carry a little unconvinient because of the advantage in actual using. Often you also wear clothes with roomy pockets.
All in all I appritiate this pattern, and the actual specific caseknife a lot and my feeling of an urge to honor SunnyDs gift with some use went into a sucess in using a great pattern for my part of life that happens in the waste wilderness of northern Sweden. It also spreed to my townlife and more than once a week it kind of sneeks into my jeans backpocket and tags along to work. Its to big to carry comfortable but to good to be overlooked, Hate and love in the same package.
