Recently, I sent Peter (kyenglish) my JK Kentucky Fieldmate to try out for a bit. Peter generously offered me a selection of his blades to try as well and decided that his Benchmade Nagara looked like a very interesting EDC type folder, so I asked him to send it to me. I received a box from Peter over the weekend that held the Nagara, my JKKFM, the original JK pocket sheath AND a custom kyenglish pocket sheath for the Fieldmate as well! I am still always taken aback at the generosity, selflessness and kindness of everyone here and Peter is no exception to that! The sheath is very nice, well made and fits the knife perfectly. I look forward to trying it out as we hike the mountains of Georgia later this week. Thanks again Peter!

The Benchmade Nagara

First Impressions:

The knife is smaller than I thought but really an almost ideal size for the pocket and 99% of the EDC type tasks I would look for it to perform. It is fairly light weight and carries well in the pocket (I have to keep checking to make sure it's still there!) Opening is very smooth, despite the slim profile and thumb stud placement being a little less than ideal for my hand size. The F&F is spot on and the knife is very "classy" looking overall with a polished blade and attractive titanium handles. The "Nak-Lok" mechanism is easy to manipulate and seems very solid. Blade profile is well done, plenty of point (which is great for EDC use) and a reassuringly thick spine. The pocket clip is wide, solid and not too aggressive on the pocket seam. Peter fashioned a lanyard in blue paracord with a handy sliding knot for adjustment. I like this arrangement and will be stealing the idea for some of my other knives. Overall, a very nice piece of functional pocket art.

My testing will center around basic, everyday type use and evaluating the knife as an EDC travel companion.

thanks for the compliments Sean, the sheath isn't exactly up to the standard of "custom" around these parts but it's just kinda routine for em to try it when a new one comes in now and not having a fieldmate I'd have no use for it...yet :p

The Nagara's looking good, hope it serves you well, the landyard is a "ranger knot", swiped the idea myself from some fella here on the Becker forum :)

safe travels

Nice! I have always wanted a Nagara, but never did pick one up.

I like Benchmades (who am I kidding - I like everything lol ), thanks for the nice review.

It's cool to see that someone else cuts up an apple at their desk like I do nearly every day.

Thanks for the review, and thanks for loaning out the Nagara, Peter!

I took the Nagara with on our trip to Georgia, using it as my main pocket folder the entire time. My initial impressions and comments still hold true. This is a very pocketable EDC folder, well built and attractive. After a bit of use, the only small negative might be the blade steel. I would like to see this design in a premium steel but that would also likely drive up the price as well. The steel is serviceable but I found it to be harder to touch up on my Profile ceramic than I prefer. All in all, for a street price of under $70, titanium handle and good looks I would rate it a 7.5/10.

Thanks again to kyenglish for the loan!

That's a nice looking knife. I'd love it if it didn't have the blade etch.

I know what you mean, I see the original for sale every now and again and think of buying it but all my money goes somewhere else instead...if you'd like to see it I think Sean could send it on to you as well as to me, if your home sometime I guess :)

Nice, I have been looking at these but it is the blade steel that turns me off. I may have to get one and try it out now.

I appreciate it but I'm so busy and have so many irons in the fire I don't know when I'll have time to try it out.
I sure enjoy seeing the pics though.
