The Truth About the SHBA

The pursuit of in these difficult financial times has probably driven more than one of us hogs and hogettes to narrow our search to the "perfect" examples of Jerry's art as each of us defines it. For me, I am a Steel Heart kinda gal and always will be. I am old school, I love my SH-E user and my BM-E, the ergos and the straight handles. For some reason they fit my smaller hands better and make my chores much easier.

Recently through the endless generosity of a fellow straight handle lovin' hog, I finally acquired my very own SHBA, and thus, what I consider to be the "perfect pair" for any and all situations: the SHSHII and the SHBA:

But with my brand-new SHBA, my benefactor sent along a user for me to play with: an infi SHBA (bottom knife pictured below):

Obligatory comparison spine shot:

So what I decided to do was spend the next few weeks giving this little beast a workout. I put away all of my other knives and used only the infi SHBA for everything at home and afield. Kitchen duty:

It even slices tomato without a blip:

And the toughest task of all, cutting down the ever-present encroaching sumac in my dog yard:

My conclusions? Ahhhh...this little blade is like an extension of my hand. It does everything well and is forcing me to rethink how big a knife has to be to be a great all-rounder! Did I mention that it has done all of these chores for me and not once have I touched up the edge?

That's old school perfection for you!

that's awesome, i'm glad you got your unicorn. those are two fine looking looking blade's. now it's time to put it through the ringer.

Good stuff Robin.

Glad you found your set.

I love the BM-E and SH-E also and have yet to set to task on acquiring the straight handle set that I want.

I agree I think the SHBA along with the classic Steel Heart are the pinnacle of Jerry's Acievments as a knife maker.

I regret selling my fat SHBA but I needed the money very badly. I would like to have another to use.

Nice pics.

Congrats, Robin! That sure is a good piglet you've got for a friend. ;)

That combo is my ideal as well, but for right now I'm happy with the Euro Mojo and the SHBA.

I'm happy you got your perfect duo.

Nice!

I'd love a INFI SHBA. If only b/c they are thinner. I've got 2 spots on mine - the last 1/8th inch of tip and the last 1/4" before the choil that were just too obtuse. They'll never be sharp at a usable non-chopper angle for several years of good use. I spent considerable time with my Edge-Pro to pull back that edge a bit and get it to the point where it is slice-able sharp most everywhere. I'm just frusted (my own word) that I can't get the entire edge profile to be that sharp. :(

Plus the INFI ones are lighter. This thing is like using a brick. Altho I agree it can be a SUPERB all-around knife without being 7" long.

That is some good pics of some great knives Robin!!! Enjoy Little Lady...

What a great set of knives. Those are so perfect it is hard to describe the feeling you get when you see them.

Congratulations on your good fortune.

Best regards, Les.

The SHSHII and the SHBA:

Congrats Azshaman. That is indeed a VERY NICE PAIR.

I agree those are two of the BEST.

And would quite nearly serve my ultimate combo needs as well.

The SHSHII is darn good as is. - I would prefer satin and some optional minor detail considerations might include a slight preference for full convex and maybe smooth bolts. But, I wouldn't change much else. - Since I can't justify the secondary market price for a SHSH, I might just have to do a lot of work on my NMSFNO (strip, satin finish, smooth out thumb ramp/recess, rehandle ????)

However, for my SHBA preferences, I MUST have the choil removed and would prefer the Talon Hole small or remove it.

And I would WAY prefer about 0.1875" thick blade on the SHBA.

Something very close to the following (if at 0.1875" thick), and I am with you.

But, I need my SHBA at WAY less than secondary market pricing as well - preferably SATIN at around $225 or so.:o

I would be happy with either A2 or INFI - so long as satin at a reasonable price. :o

So, until then, I will keep hoping for an "Anniversary SHBA" with no choil option and 0.1875" thick to be released someday.
