Recently while sharpening a CRKt Crawford/Kasper I reground the relief angle until I got a burr and proceeded to the crock sticks. The edge would barely cut newspaper. Thinking I wasn't hitting the edge I did the sharpie trick for the first time in my life and got a nice shiny bevel along the edge. Thinking I might have a rolled edge I run it against a plate to remove it and back to the crocks. I was back to barely cutting newspaper. In frustration I reground the relief angle again until I got a burr again and resharpened on the crock sticks. This time the edge came back to a hair popping edge. It is like I hit a bad patch of steel that had to be removed but I don't think that is possible, is it? I have been sharpening knives for a long time and I've never had that happen before. Anybody care to hazard a guess?
