These are the first two knives I ever made but that was a long time ago. :D:D

I've made some changes since then.

Fitting, of your name! I think they're great. I've always wanted to try knapping stone for a knife.

Did you knapp it with bone and lace with sinew? Blade looks like obsidian, is it from Alaska? I been to a few knapp-ins, they are at least as fun as knife shows.

I actually posted this as kind of a joke, but maybe not a good one. I was hoping someone would ask how long ago I started making knives, or how old I am. Get it? cuzz they're real old-timey

Really, I just made these. I took up knapping about a year and a half ago and people were asking me to show them how so I started teaching classes this winter. I cheated on these a little bit, I used copper for the knapping and synthetic sinue for the lashing. If I get a chance this fall, I will save some real sinue and switch it out.

I think it would be real cool to have example of each major advancement in tool making. You could go earlier an have a spall with leather around it and go later through the bronze age, all the way to present time. I have never been to a knapp-in but they look like great fun.

This is Origon obsidian, we have some up here but is is not near as good as this.

The handles on these are ancient steppe bison rib bone and ancient deer antler.

Thanks everyone.

Actually I believed you, since I know some who started knapping and moved to knifemaking :)

Thanks for the info. From what I've been told, to be "authentic" you attach the point with sinew and then use a glue made out of some part of a deer...antler IIRC? The "glue" is boiled down and takes awhile. Kind of like the modern wrap with added epoxy :)

The things you see at a knapp-in can be kind of amazing. One guy had some World Trade Center Glass and had made a really nice spear point as a display piece. There a trading circles going on just about all the time and lots of hands on play with spears, arrows, hawks, etc. Good time is had by all, and it's out doors, with participants camping.

Yep, a knapp in sounds great, I'm going to go to one some day, maybe see you there.
