Hogs,

I have bought and sold 20+ knives over the past few years including both folding and fixed blades. I have owned knives in INFI, SR101 and Elmax from the Busse & Kin lineup. I know these are rookie numbers by many members standards, but the knives were well used.

I finally settled on the Busse CABS LE. In my opinion, this is one of the most functional knives they have ever made when considering woods, hunting, daily-use situations. It is extremely strong but not overly thick. I am a fan of the length, width of the blade and the meltdown treatment. Also really like black paper micarta over G10 and other options. I don't miss the choil on this one.

My CABS LE has broken down several deer and other animals. Used for kindling prep, eating, food prep, can opening, fire starting and a number of other odd jobs. The knife has seen extensive use in the Alpine mountains in Victoria, Australia and seen some of the wettest climate in the world, on the West Coast of South Island, NZ.

The CABS LE was obviously a very good seller - I have seen them numbered in the 900's and several non LE versions were sold. I would assume several purchased were bought as a collectors item or combat intentions. The majority were likely bought to be used and abused through daily tasks and hunting. After the years of use and much pondering I have considered that a few small changes to the CABS LE would create the PERFECT hunting knife. The knife is on the heavy side for its size. The weight balance is toward the handle rather than the blade. Once you add a sheath of any kind, the weight becomes prohibitive to long term use.

Here are the proposed changes:
Round the butt and remove the excess metal behind the third handle screw/pin
Give it the light brigade treatment. Similar to a skeleton warden

Pics below of a skeleton warden with the lightening treatment and a CS CABS with rounded handle butt.

This is obviously all based on my opinion, but I felt like I should provide feedback during OP2W and see if any other Hogs share similar thoughts. Most people will be satisfied with the knife as is, but I truly believe that together we can't make small changes and create the ultimate hunting/woods tool. I would prefer keeping it satin and in INFI but don't hate the idea of a coated SR101 version.

What say you HOGS?!

I'm kinda a choil guy myself, :-) but with or without I'd be in for a couple :-)

I'd actually like to see a version of the Boss street at Ratmandu scale. Love the handle and drop point, just a great knife.
I've got a Boss Jack but would like to see a little shorter blade and wider blade ? Just my .02 worth :-)

Jerry did mention future mini Ganzaaaas... Would be great to get a choil and no choil option to satisfy both users.

Modified SRKW RT, my favorite hunting blade. I sure wouldn't say no to that orange-handled CABS there in the picture though

Ditto on the Boss Jack. I didn't order the O2W BG version when it was offered because it just looked like a "stabby" knife to me. Ended up getting one in a grab bag and instantly fell in love with it but my first though was "a little shorter and it wold be perfect". Not sure if I'd mess with the width though. I think shortening it a bit would make its width very nicely proportioned.

Looks nice. I'd like the holes in the handle and the talon hole to be gone. (No Busse blasphemy intended regarding the talon hole.) Less big spots for gunk to get in if you are butchering game. I generally prefer no choil or just a small one. Definitely satin finished INFI first, then uncoated satin SR101, but not painted in either.

My dream is a choilless boss street that is a touch thicker than the anorexics...perhaps 0.18"-0.20". Satin infi with black canvas. Mmmm...hello custom shop, are the doors open yet?

:D

I would have kept my cabs le if as you suggest it was lighter and the handle was in canvas. The black paper is slick and slicker when wet. For a 4" knife it carried like a bigger knife(weight wise). I like the war dog as an all around hunting knife. Yea I know it's thick. I used to dislike overly thick knives but I realize what really matters is how thick it is behind the edge not at the spine. Yes its a little of a compromise between my war dog or my basic 4 skinny, but for one knife only I appreciate the beefiness of the war dog. Both have the best handle to hold on to when your hands start to cramp. So that was my answer to the weight and the grip issues I had.

I'm with ya here HD. The war dog is thickish at the spine but the flat grind makes it cut like a much thinner knife.

The CABS was too handle heavy in my opinion. I'd LOVE to see more of the smaller busse's... say 5" and under have the LB treatment or be drilled out under the scales to help the balance and lighten the overall weight of the knife. Hunters carry plenty of gear and it all adds up. The beer cooler alone is a killer!

.

The SOB is about just about what I consider ideal for a medium to large game hunting knife. A hollow grind would finish it up perfectly. That being said the CS MSE works better for me on birds/small game and I would have no qualms about using it on larger game. It doesn't need anything at all changed about it. To me it is perfect in every way.
