I like to bring a watermellon out on hiking trips. It's an excellent source of food and water, and the empty husk is usefull as an emergency water container. I've used my paracord to make a handle.

I'm surprized no one else I've met has thought of this. I get a lot of strange looks on the trail, but it really works. Has anyone else tried this?

For the smaller trips use a coconut. Less water but more calories. And the shell lasts longer too

Here is where the little saws on the multitools come in handy.

Good idea Shank, but, depending on the watermelon, those things get heavy to lug around after a while.

Watermelons are good, and I've been known to eat more than others have thought possible before, but I would not carry one as a survival tool. I would carry one as a delicious food. If you are worried about energy, water and a container, there are more compact versions of all of those. If you are looking for a very good food, that I would be happy to come back for seconds on, then it fits the category well...
