The Ultimate Summit

WOW, where do they start the climb at in this pic.?

Climbers start at the bottom of the frame of this image near the Khumbu Glacial runout (acclimatize for awhile - depends on the Lead Guide.....). From there, which is known as "Everest Base Camp", climbers will then ascend to 4 increasingly higher "camps" spending a day or three (or longer as needed) at each as well as ferrying loads of food and oxygen tanks from lower camps all as part of the acclimatization process. Once at Camp 4 (and weather depending), the climbers will make a mad rush for the summit.

I've never climbed in the Himalaya, but it was (previously....) on my life "tick list" so i studied it quite a bit.

I don't know what camera was used. The photographer is David Breashears, who should be very familiar to Himalaya fans. It was done by Glacier Works, and about 400 individual pictures (all taken with a 300mm lens) were stitched together to make that image.

That is really cool! Gives those of us who have never been there a real perspective of its enormity.

Breashears works with some folks who have pretty deep pockets (the Imax "Everst" film for example...) so i'd guess full-frame dSLR. I doubt he'd be lugging 4x5 film gear up, though he certainly could!!!

Thanks for the post - the scenery looks amazing.
