The ULTIMATE weapon retention setup!

Well, okay, maybe it's not the ULTIMATE, but it's the best I've found so far, and if someone knows a better way, feel free to let me know!
I carry my Commander in my right front pocket, just like all the "normal" people do, but I've started carrying my waved CQC-7 (RH) in my LEFT front pocket.
With the CQC-7 clipped point up, inside the pocket, and pushed far forward in the pocket, it's possible to use the wave feature left handed and come up with the knife in reverse grip. (It takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, it works fine!)
The weapons retention idea, is that if Mr. BG manages to get his hand on my (behind the right hip) pistol, I can clamp down with my right hand, preventing him from drawing the pistol. While this is going on, left hand draws the CQC-7 in reverse grip and I begin trying to convince Mr. BG that he really doesn't want my pistol anyway. (jab, jab, jab, "LET GO!" repeat as necessary or desired.)

I had considered buying a LH CQC-7 for this purpose, but it turns out that I actually prefer the (RH) mounting, as there is no need for a grip transition.

Like I said, it's the best I've found so far, but if anyone's got a better idea, (Shut up, Ford!) lemme know!

Do a search for Reverse Grip, been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Hahahahaha

I did not invent it [obviously] these things come about on their own.

A Hangman's Noose Lanyard or a knotted pinch cord aids in the left hand reverse grip, Waving Draw.

Actually, the first person that I saw using that technique was Harry Humphries, former SEAL Team 2 operator, movie guru, and all around great guy.

I have to say, Harry cheated. He is left handed and we had not yet made the first LH Commanders. He was sort of forced to employ this technique. It is unreal how fast Harry is for a guy of his size.

To take the technique 1 step further, you can actually go from the draw directly to a cut to the forearm if you are able to trap the offending handas you reach for your secondary.

Ken,
I'm a leftie and I carry and draw my SOCFK in the reverse grip,as A matter of fact, I like it so much I don't even carry my "leftie"Commander. However that might change when I get my C/P Commander from EKI

Harry was the first person I saw with the "Reverse Ice Pick" grip off the left side. He's good enough with it that your mouth will hang open watching him.

My best buddy has started recently carrying a righty '98 Commander in her left (support side) front pocket and has this technique down. Some may know her as the young lady that also carries a 2000 Commander in her right rear pocket (and I happen to think it looks pretty damn cute there too).

Derek, you should recognize her.

Yeah........but when you pull out the blade and it deploys in the direction going past your center line doesn't the cutting edge come a little too close to ........ Oh never mind I'll just have to open it a little more carefully

Ah well, I should have known that SOMEONE thought of it before I did. The fact that it was Harry Humphries kinda softens the blow though.

Ross,
Give it a try, lifting up, and either straight forward, or a degree or two to your left, it's no more "pointy" than opening from right hand, it just delivers the knife into a reverse grip.
Added advantage for the gun retention aspect is that you're moving the knife FORWARD away from the attacker to your rear, making it very difficult for him to block it!

As an added note, my wife is now very tired of seeing me simultaneously deploy CQC-7 from left into reverse grip and Commander from right into saber grip then grinning idiotically.

The only thing I really hate about the wave is that my MT HALO III now sits on the shelf of my safe collecting dust! It's WAY too slow!

Ken,

I've been carrying a Commander this way for weapon retention reasons since it was mentioned on tacchat one night. This WAVE thing is amazing. :-) Coworkers about **** themselves when I show it to them, then they say they want one, then they frown when I tell them how much it costs(The WAVE ain't CHEAP!). I think the WAVED 7 is better suited for this application than the Commander, as you said, "jab, jab, jab...", the 7 is a better jabber, IMO.

I gave it a try today at the range. Got some wierd looks but I'm sure the crazy, psychotic, ecstatic asian grining flicking his knife open didn't help matters too much either

It worked just fine.

I can also see the definite possiblity of this to work on as a weapons retention technique. But I also see that for the knife to open freely and fully deploy the grip is somewhat comprimised until you can get a full grip on the blade and that's once it out and in the position to cause the first cut. You're going to need to try and get a stronger more secure grip before you slash or jab I would think. How did Mr. Humphries have his grip during the open? Did he switch it immediately for a better grip purchase? Just wondering.

I'll keep trying and see what I come up with.

Thanks for the brain food,
Ross T.

Derek - call up Harry and see if he'll do a video for the site showing this! I have an idea what you guys are talking about, but I can't picture it very well... sounds cool though.

John - that IS a cute Commander.

Harry has HUGE hands on him and I don't recall him shifting his grip at all on the draw.

I believe he probably digs deep on his initial grasp of the body (squeezing with the thumb against the knife and the portion of the hand between the base of the index finger and the base of the thumb) and as it's opening complete the grip by wrapping the fingers. Just speculation on my part.

If you've seen "GI Jane", you've seen Harry. He was the Instructor timing the student with the stop watch on the re assembly of the weapons as Demi Moore starts making progress.

John,

Don't forget, harry humphries was also in "the rock" and "armageddon". He was joined in "the rock" by denny chalker, of the chalker harness fame that emerson sells. HA!!! Top that for useless movie knowledge!!!

PLUS! Not only did he appear in those films, he was Technical Advisor on them and on "Con Air" and the "Soldier or Fortune" TV series.

I see your usless information and raise you.

If you recall a cover of "Soldier of Fortune" Magazine with two guys coming in for a landing in a Tandom Parachute rig. One driving and the other was the gunner, hand carrying a (dummy) M60, that was Harry in the front and Dennis in the drivers seat.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome back to "Name That SEAL"! If you'll remember before our commercial break, RogueShooter was attempting to close the gap with John Hollister by pulling an obscure sighting of Denny "Snake" Chalker from a certain magazine. Will he pull into the lead? Let's watch and see, shall we? Gentlemen, please continue...

Alright, staying with the topic at hand and not moving easily off to other folks . . . Harries three web sites, Newt Livesay has a picture of Harry and himself on his site and "Smoke" magazine did a story on him in 3/98.
