The Unclip: a new clip idea

This thought came to me last night so I quickly drew a primitive concept to illustrate it.

Basically, I like to carry a knife clipped, but I don't often like to use the knife with the clip.

With this concept, the exagerrated S shaped clip attaches to the pocket. The knife has a slot machined in the scale between the scale and liner. The clip has a prong which slips into the knife slot. The prong can be bent to provide spring action to retain the knife in the pocket. I also debated a ball detent for retention too. While the bali clip sketch shows points on the prongs, they would be rounded for comfort and safety.

The knife that really inspired this concept is my BM Morpho. The clip is uncomfortable in the grip for serious use.

For a bali, the prong is split to slip into the two handles so the clip holds the bali closed if you want to carry a latchless bali.

Pros:

no clip to interfere with the grip

deep carry clips fit on most any knife without messing up the knife ergonomics.

Tip up or tip down should be easy to accomplishon the same knife without changing screws.

Cons:

Adds expense to the knife

Would require a company to produce few different complex clip designs rather than one for the whole line.

Probably adds girth to the knife design

Could be tricky to reclip. I would think a flared slot would help guide the clip into place but still could be a bit tricky until you get the hang of it.

Lock interactions. Should work on a liner lock and lockback. The Axis lock would be trickier. A narrow prong offset in the handle might fix that on some designs.

The cons outnumber the pros, but the pros outweigh the cons in my mind. It's not the right clip for every knife, but I'd like it on most of my knives.

Interesting idea, but I would think it would add a degree of complication to the draw/repocket of the knife that would far exceed any minor egros gained from no clip. But then again, I've never minded the pocket clips on my knives, helps fill out my hand and the edges provide extra grip.

Someone else thought of something similar also and had me make him one a while back. It was very difficult to make and took more than twice the titanium of the normal clips (looks like yours would be three times as much) but apparently he uses it just as you describe only to clip a sheath instead of a knife as I recall. I just made it based on his drawing. Can't say I ever saw what he planned to attatch to it.

How about a knife with a spring-loaded clip that retracts into the scales when removed from the pocket? It could pivot in such a way that finger pressure placed on one end could expose the clip again when it was time to return the knife to the pocket. Personally though, I think it's just an over-complication, since I don't find clips interfering with the ergonomics of any of my knives.

Boker made something similar, and honestly, it looks really clunky and expensive to make (apparently).

No real "perfect" solution I think. about as good as it gets would be a kydex/leather sheath clipped inside the pocket, wouldn't have to cover the whole knife, just about half or so.

Even before the type that William Henry used, there was the Elishewitz Kangaroo pouch. This was essentially a heavy gauge nylon with elastic sides pouch that held a folder or even other accessory such as a small tubular shaped flashlight. It was to be worn inside the pocket held in place with a beefy black plastic clip.

I've seen the pouches before and never really liked the access they provided.
