Well for a long time I have avoided Vic patterns that contained the corkscrew. Why? Because I don't drink wine and the thing takes up extra space! Well, I'm reconsidering my aversion to this tool for a few reasons. First, I searched all the patterns that had the corkscrew and found a few that really hit the spot. Specifically the Ranger and Huntsman. Second, last week I found myself in a situation where I could have used that dang corkscrew! I was at a church dinner and there were bottles of wine on the table and no opener. We waited twenty minutes before a wine opener came around and all I could think about was how unprepared I came to a church function without a wine opener;)
Anyway, there are times when I do need to open a bottle of wine. When I am at a church dinner and they aren't offering beer and when my wife needs a bottle opened for one of her recipes calling for wine.
Aha! I need a corkscrew!

So I began to think about this new threshold I was potentially crossing and began to realize that the corkscrew was an essential part of the SAK design and tradition. Ask anyone over thirty maybe forty to draw a SAK and they will draw the corkscrew on the knife! So, the corkscrew is a very traditional symbol of the SAK. I love tradition!

So I bought a Ranger and a Huntsman. I love them both and I am growing as a person and a multitool enthusiast!

So how about you guys and gals? What are your thoughts on the corkscrew? Has it stopped you from committing to a particular pattern? What other uses besides untying cord and eyeglass driver have you found useful with the corkscrew?

Can't go wrong with a corkscrew. It's a good excuse to buy a few more SAK's.

Besides, it gives you a very good reason to buy an bottle-opening dedicated SAK to be left in the kitchen drawer

The Waiter is puuurfect for such duty!

I don't drink wine either, but have used the corkscrew to untie knots. It rocks for that. Of course, I've also untied knots with a Tinker's phillips head. The corkscrew is a better tool for that, but either will suffice.

So I'm a fan of having the corkscrew, but will carry models without as well.

Occasional wine drinker here, and have used the corkscrew on my Climber. I agree, it does feel like a iconic swiss army knife tool. In addition, it does a good job at undoing knots.

Rarely use the corkscrew on my Climber.
I would like Alox model with corkscrew:) something new!

You people should really give wine a chance. Combined with the right food, it makes it so much more enjoyable (rule of thumb: red meat - red wine; white meat (including fish) - white wine). It wouldn't only enrich your lifes, but also make you appreciate your SAKs a lot more! And of course, it's the best knot-untieing tool I've come accross, leaving every fiber of your valuable cordage intact because of its dull point.

I get regular shipments of beautiful wines . Most come with screwtops now. There is the odd one with a cork usually not real cork either but a plastic type thing.
These won't disintegrate like a lot of corks do.

While not a wine drinker, I have become the hero to a some wine-drinking women at a parties a few of times in the past year when no one else had one. That alone justifies having a corkscrew on my SAK.

At home, I use the corkscrew on my 111mm Picnicker instead of a regular dedicated corkscrew. I generally EDC a Waiter, Sportsman, or Spartan, all of which have a corkscrew. Always be prepared.

Great to read everyones thoughts on this. I have nothing against wine. Wine is a remarkable beverage witch brings a lot of enjoyment and enhancement to life. I just don't drink it. But, having the corkscrew on hand could be a great asset one day. Lots of people seem to use the tool to untie knots and use the micro screw driver. Anybody used it for something else?

I had the same question and ended up on sakwiki.com, which listed the following possible uses for the corkscrew:
extracting fuel filter when repairing an engine
extract the stub of a spent candle from a candle holder
extract plug holders from IKEA furniture
affix the knife to an overhead beam to hold a mosquito net (or maybe to a tree or vertical beam as a hanger)
remove cotton wads from pill bottles

While not a wine drinker, I have become the hero to a some wine-drinking women ...

Very nice! I'd rather have to bum a Philips-head screwdriver from someone than leave a cute gal thirsty!

Plus, the micro-screwdriver insert rocks.
