The village khukuris are already arriving!

I sent Kami a fax and told him to send about 15 village khukuris of various size and style and the village khukuris are already coming in! Kami will be sending about 15 this week.
Here's how Kami did it. He went down to the bus station and told a few travellers headed for various parts of Nepal the following:

When you pass through this and that village leave word that I am looking for a few khukuris.

The very next day two village kamis showed up with a couple of khukuris each! Word of mouth travels very fast in Nepal.

Why would they come so quickly? It's simple. The village kamis know Kami Sherpa and they know he will pay them more for their khukuris than anybody else in Nepal. He will pay from five to eight times what they would get if they tried to sell the khukuris locally. He will pay them two or three times more than a dealer in Kathmandu would pay them. They can take a day off, ride the bus into Kathmandu with two khukuris, sell the khukuris to Kami, take the bus back home that night and still turn a very decent profit for themselves.

My fear is now we are going to be flooded with village khukuris.

I'll start posting some pix as soon as they arrive.

Uncle Bill

PS: I forgot. We will try to supply the name of the kami and his village with each khukuri.

Bill, you know my taste for short to medium length, light, fast martial arts type blades. That 17"/14 oz. Chainpuri is my all time favorite. I need spares for it. But if a 15"/12 oz. comes in, and I need another 12" til my Sirupati comes back....

I think all the "village" knives will go as fast as you get them. I'm hoping some pretty unique pieces come thru to add to the mix here in the states. Deer horn 15" sirupati with tooled scabbard? Looking forward to their arrival...

Uncle?

I have the chequebook in hand.

Looking for that short (15"-ish) chopper...nice camp/hiking utility, heavy-duty, rode-hard-and-put-away-wet blade.

Hey, curious: I'm in no way in a 'rush' to get this knife...I'm philosophical about such things. But if they're already showing up at the collection points in Nepal, how long are we talking until they trickle over to us?

Mike, I think we will see the first village khukuris in less than three weeks. As I mentioned, my fear is there will be too many kamis coming to visit and if they go to the trouble to take a bus to Kathmandu with hopes of selling a couple of khukuris for a decent price I know Kami will hate to send them back without any $$$. I hope we have not opened Pandora's Box!

The deer horn 15 inch Sirupati with tooled scabbard is a dream, John. But, we may see some bone handles which HI does not offer.

*grin*

I only ask because my martial arts club is going camping in a few weeks. It would be a sweet surprise to pack along a khukuri to frighten the white belts.

Still, though, no biggie. I have plenty of tools to get firewood cut and campsites cleared.

Bill, of course it's a dream. That's why I collect..to search for those dreams.

John, of some interest to the collector is some of the village khukuris can be very unique. As I mentioned somewhere else that I can't recall, it is nice to have the only one in the world -- of anything.

Uncle Bill

Hopefully your village khukuri program will make for a lot of happy kamis and encourage them to keep the traditions alive. I for one will be wanting a diversity of these specimens.

Hi threadbane:

I like the village khukuris but there is no standard product line, they are not pretty, so makes it pretty difficult to sell them as a standard product. We will see what happens with them and if the interest continues the kamis will keep bringing them in.
