This has to be the most impressive collection of images since the first issue of Playboy hit the stands.

As a Tennessean, it's only right that I Volunteer to help you eat the bacon and sip the whiskey :)

The main thing I want to get across, which I did in another thread is this:

If you are ever down in Middle to Eastern TN, all of the following places are real close to another: Jack Daniel's, George Dickel, Lodge Cast Iron MFG. and Benton's.

Lodge is about an hour or so from Jack. Jack is about another hour from George. Benton's is about a 100 miles or so from this area, closer to the Smoky Mountains. Although they are close if you ever find yourself down this way please allow yourselves lots of time. Things move at a slower pace in these hollers. I would allow just a day to spend around JD in Lynchburg. Think curvy mountain roads in these areas. Slow as ya go. If you are the hurry type, you'll have to adjust your schedule.

As for the bacon I got in the mail, here is the scoop. I have read positive and negative reviews of the bacon. I am happy to report that it is the best bacon I have ever had. I never saw bacon produce that much bacon grease in a skillet or smell the place up with such a strong aroma (a good one!). Goes great with JD or GD. It's all pros except for one con depending upon which way you look at it...the bacon is expensive shipped. Four, 1 pound packages shipped to Missouri was about $40.00. A real bargain considering the price of gas in my pickup truck and a thousand mile round trip (I get about 19 mpg). My next purchase of this bacon will be in person.

JD and GD offer free tours. Lodge does not offer tours, but they have the great factory outlet store near the factory with 1rsts and 2nds. Benton's I don't know about...it is on the list as I haven't been there yet...

Can you smell the bacon???

Dickle No. 12 is definitely in my completely unbiased opinion the best whisky that has ever been created in the timespan of infinity.

Wife and I have been to George Dickel (last month)..we did not have time to take a tour or go to the store...we pledged to travel back someday when we have lots of time. I have toured Jack Daniel's a couple times before so it's not as high on the list as Dickel. How inviting does this look...your looking at the whole distillery more or less....I hear a banjo pickin' a familiar tune driving to this place...it is *OFF* the beaten path!

While driving back to Missouri we detoured through Nashville and spied this downtown (haven't tasted it yet!):

I've been to the Lodge outlet store, but not any of the distilleries. My wife is afraid I would never leave...

James, you should hit Jack Daniels in October when they have the World Championship BBQ. Worth the trip.

Benton's is about a hundred miles from Lodge...it took about 5 weeks or so to get the bacon in the mail, I wonder if they always have it at the store for sale?

Be sure to pay your respects to Lem Motlow and Jack Daniel. I think they are resting at a cemetery right there in Lynchburg...I wish I would have thought of that my last trip down.

Yes, the blue Chimay is great. They know how to produce a great product. It's the only imported thing in the pictures. I wouldn't drink George Dickel for a long time as they are owned by Diageo a British company in London, England. I got over that....Dickel does know how to make a tasty product.

I did have to read up on the bacon before I shelled out the $$$ to have it shipped. Most were all positive and a few were negative. They said it was too salty and smoky mostly on the negative reviews. The instructions that came with it said it is better to under cook it instead of over cook. I under cooked it and it turned out fine. My next batch I will cook it a bit longer. I still say that it is the best bacon I have ever had. Period. I detected no saltiness whatsoever.

I wonder why more mom & pop stores aren't around that do this type of thing. Probably requires lots of work I am sure.

The negative reviews about the smoky flavor are spot on; some folks just don't have tastebuds. Smoke is good and my living room will smell fine for days. I see no problem.

They need to have a Benton's Glade Plug-In air freshener.
