The VTAC has Arrived and Questions!!!

The wife entered the house yesterday evening carrying a box that fit my mental description of what my VTAC should be in. Sure enough it was, and with a bonus folding knife to boot! Later, while admiring the tomahawk, my youngest daughter (7) asked me "what is that for". I explained to here that I was taking it to Iraq so that I could chop up trees and stuff. She then said, "You can chop up bad people too". I of course said NO, but had to fight back a tear of love and admiration over what a fine young lady, and visionary, she was turning out to be. And people are worried about America's youth... :D

I am impressed with all aspects of the VTAC. It is already attached to my battle gear and has been brought to the unit for others to admire. I do have one question in regards to the handle. Does anyone have any good recommendations for additional grip covering? It feels kind of slippery in an ungloved hand. I have not tried it with a glove on yet. I have thought about a 550 cord wrap, but it may interfere with pulling the handle through the hole in the sheath. Also, can anyone recommend a good carry position for quick employment (without the purchase of another sheath)? I currently have it on my weak side, with the sheath attached just above my hip. I may end up attaching a small length of cord to the head so that I can pull it out one-handed. This would alleviate me having to reach down and push it out by the handle with my left hand, while reaching across to grab the head with my right hand.

Thanks to Andy for great support (during the two plus months of waiting and worrying about getting it in time) and a great product. While I would like to have purchased the VTAC for recreational purposes and backyard fun, I didn't. Further, while I hope it never comes down to using the VTAC or becoming another statistic, I feel confident that I have the best tool for that situation. Happy New Year and Semper Fidelis.

You might want to try wrapping the handle of your VTAC with some of that "skateboard tape" stuff for extra grip.

Yes as a former "Thrasher/Skate Punk" (the 80s were boring) I first considered that, but that stuff would chew up the mitts pretty bad. Although just a few strips or small pieces may be the answer. Thanks for the idea.

Actually, after you wrap the handle with the grip tape, you can smooth it (wear the grit down) alittle by gently rubbing it with another piece of the grip-tape.

We have found that strips of skateboard tape placed on the finger grooves and along the spine of the handle in the grip area, works excellently. It's inexpensive and for those who want that extra measure of tactility, it does the job surprisingly well.

Glockman99 and Andy,

After messing with 550 cord for the last hour (and failing) I will definately try the grip tape. Good advice on wearing it down a bit Glockman99! Now if I can just find some here in the land of the rising sun. Japanese don't skate (they do surf though). Thanks again!!!!

Jagger....

If you have no tape, take a smooth nicholson file and make some shallow grooves in the grip area...just straight cuts across the spine of the handle and maybe inside the finger grooves...don't make them deep, but just enough to grab some sweaty palm when you go into sympathetic response.

You won't void the warranty if you make a few small file cuts...you have my word on that.

Jagger8dogs,

Check out this thread concerning my V-Tac from last year.

My New Toy

About 3/4 down the page are photos of my cord wrapped tomahawk and below that is a description of how I did it. I find it works very well. Of, course I did have to widen the hole in the sheath but that wasn't difficult at all. (Pertaining to the LB sheath and not he new Spec-Ops sheath.)

No problem...We are here at BladeForums to help, and you can bet that Andy has noted the "sliperyness" of the VTAC handle and will improve on it if possible...He IS one guy who listens to his customers, and strives to make the BEST products in the industry!

They Make A Hockey Stick Tape That Works Great On Handles .
It Stays A Little Tackey And You Can Put On As Much As You Want.

I got my skateboard tape at Dick's Sporting goods, here in NJ. They have a website; my guess is that they' mail some your way.
I use skateboard tape on the front and backstrap of my CZ-75. it works good.
I just went and played with my VTAC; mine does not seem too slippery to me. But, I may try to wrap the handle with para cord, now that these posts have inspired me.

I believe the Japenese people have the internet. Order over net.
And I do think they play some Hockey

Anyone ever tried using a thin bicycle inner tube? I think I'm going to try it on mine.

I ended up doing the 550 cord wrap as pointed out by Bullwhip. Looks nice but still a little slippery. I ended up gutting the cord so that it was not as thick. It worked out nicely. I will pick up some grip tape during my brief stop in the states prior to rolling. I did end up having to trim the plastic insert in the sheath so that the edge of 550 cord wrap didn't catch on the insert. I also attached a loop of cord to the head for quick, one handed removal. Since I have not thrown this or ANY hawk before, I'm wondering if it will negatively affect flight performance. Thanks to EVERYONE for their responses and advice. Semper Fidelis!!!
