The Wharncliffe Trapper is a really cool design IMO. Anyone have one? What do you think about it? I think I'll be buying this Case mini trapper soon. :D

We had a period on this forum when the wharnie trapper was all the rage. I don't have one but the handle is probably really comfortable.

God Bless

Got the Mini-Trapper pattern,2 jigged and one smooth bone.I like them a lot, never been a fan of the Spey blade much so the Wharncliffe is much more useful.Good medium size, and the CASE fit&finish on them is very good-half stops and a smooth spring that's flush. Some scale colours are a bit questionable though....

Mini Trapper  Great size. It feels like its bigger than it is, if that makes any sense

I agree, I don't like any of the colors in the wharncliffe trapper line except for the mediterranean blue.

If you look around for it you can sometimes find a copperhead pattern w/a wharny blade. Full size 3 7/8", or the mini (single spring) 3 1/4". These feel better in my hand. Plus you get the sunken joint!

Here's my copperhead...

Thanx Bob for the photo.

I like #1,4,5 on the top picture.

That's an awesome knife!

I received the wharncliffe mini trapper with the green handles for Father's Day. I've been EDCing it every day since. It is a great knife. Both blades were shaving sharp out of the box, and have been easy to keep that way. I use it for general everyday tasks, and cardboard trembles in fear at its sight.:D

I prefer the wharncliffe blade to the spey blade, but that is just a personal preference thing. The straight blade cuts very smoothly and I've had no problems with it overall.

As with everything else, YMMV.

If they made more trappers with wharncliffs, I'd have more trappers. Nothing against the old spey blade but the wharnie just seems to have more uses in the modern world.

I have been EDCing a traditional trapper with the spey blade for the last year and a half, and I love it. I find the spey blade really useful and like it quite a bit, but I have been eyeing the wharncliff trapper for some time. I think now is the time to pull the trigger and carry it for a while. Those colors are spectacular. Only wish they offered them in CV though.

ETA: I have several cases in trusharp stainless and really like them too.

Here's my mini-trapper in CV & red jigged bone.

I won it on this forum a couple of years ago. Bear in mind we don't see a lot of Case over here in the UK (but it's getting better) and at the time I wasn't familiar with the pattern at all. It's a really sound EDC. Excellent f & f, half stops and I like it a lot.

David, that is the same knife as in my top picture. And I think I can see one of the "S" from the "SS" (stainless) peeking around the corner on your blade there. So, I'm afraid that will be the most stain resistant CV you have ever had ;)

Any recent CV model will have "CV" instead of "SS" noted on the blade.

Just checked and you're right, Mike :p :D

Thanks for spotting the error. Now to update the spreadsheet :o

Wasn't there a production hardware store brand trapper back in the 1930's with a wharncliffe blade called a Hawbaker special or howbacker or something like that?

Not sure, but I think you may be referring to a type of Muskrat pattern that has a Wharncliffe instead of 2 Turkish Clip blades.

Mike Latham. I really like that No.6 Wharn Trapper. Is that some kind of Harvest Bone?? I have the Red, not too bad a colour and the Algae Green:eek:Both have excellent F&F though. i also have a smoothbone Emerald Green but it's really Jade colour, not so bad though. Bring on Amber Bone or Chestnut in that pattern and they'd sell out completely! Fine knives:thumbup:
