I just bought a horn from an antique store in Centralia. I have no idea what it is or whether it would be useful as scales... but I thought for $10, I can't lose much. Anyone want to weigh in on what this is? Length is 11 inches, weight is 14.4 oz.

Buffalo horn tip. The end is solid and the thicker parts is where the buffalo scales are cut from. Normally these come from water buffalo, rarely do they come from bison but it is possible. Make sure it is VERY dry before use. I will split badly if it is not fully dry. It just might even if it is dry but you can always give it a try.

Have Sam forge some flowers and fruit and fill up the horn for a cornucopia !!

Triceratops.

I'd get another horn and make them into a viking helmet knife combo... just pull the horns out the helmet and viola, knives! Kind of like a hat version of a cane sword.

Maybe I should give it to Stacy and let him make the helm to go with his swords.

It will make beautiful, durable handles.
But, it stinks pretty bad when you grind it!

yep looks like water buffalo, Bison have almost no rings/ridges and are mch thinner with a mostly circular cross section.

Looks like the water buffalo that a friend of mine brought back from the Phillipines. It polished up really nice.

Bill is right on the money. It stinks when you grind it.

Thanks everyone. I will stash it away until I have a use for some horn. It seems to me it's very dry now, but it will be dryer still before I get around to using it. ;)

You know, If you sanded it smooth, and polished it.....cut about two inches off the small end........and put a raven head there...............just thinkin' on the keyboard :)

Before you stash it, spray it with bug spray, and seal it in a plastic bag. There are beetle larvae that will eat holes in it.

This gets my vote for best bizarre answer.

I'm really surprised they'd have that in an antique store up in Centralia!

If you were in Centralia you were about 20-25 minutes north of my shop.

Won't be long before I'll be driving BY your shop. The Portland antique expo is July 8 - 10 and my wife and I always catch the summer expo. Maybe I'll stop by and say hi.
