So here's my story of the Widow Rose and her Commander:
Fellow Suspect BRP points me to a Ebay listing for an 'Emerson Knife'. The posted photo is of a CN commander; however, when asked for details, the seller has provided name and serial numbers for a CQC-7. When I contacted Rose, the seller, it was obvious that she wasn't Emerson fluent. She was finally getting around to liquidating her deceased husband's knife business. I confirmed that the knife for sale was, in fact, a Commander. Her seventy-five year old eyes could not tell if the Commander was a '98 or '99. She had also gotten various knife boxes mixed up -- That's where she was getting the CQC-7 info from. I was patiently attempting to coax her into providing details off the knife itself, but she was getting flustered.
I decided to place a bid, because there were no other bids. And, I wanted Rose to see results from her efforts. (You don't want to know how much I paid..
)
When I open the most severely crushed Emerson box I've ever seen.... I find a pristine '99 CN-S, a 'transitional'. Two thick scales, a thick locking liner, thinner on the opposite side, double detent. With smooth as silk action.
It's the best of my three Commanders, but now I don't know if it should go into EDC mode or into the safe.
In Ernie's Christmas greeting post, he mentions design improvements on the Commander. Perhaps the '99 Tranny should sit until the 2002's come out to play.
