The woods, my son, making fire, and some Fallkniven F1s

Hey outdoors-men and knife people,
I spent my whole Saturday in New York City and couldn't make my way into the woods fast enough on Sunday. I told my son (9 years old) that we could work on making a fire in wet conditions and track turkey for our Friday hunting day (live in PA). He loves being in the woods and doing basic bushcraft things. Plus, he loves using knives.
I picked up my Fallkniven F1 Pro and he used his Fallkniven F1 that he got for his birthday. He has gotten pretty good at basic tasks for fires. His feather sticks are not the best but he is young. He spends most of our prep time splitting kindling and attempting to feather stick.
We were able to get a little fire going with little trouble and spent the rest of the time just carving and whittling. It was a great afternoon. My phone was dying so I only took a few pics, but figured I'd share since I know browsing outdoor shots makes my wait a little less hard till I get in the woods again.

Very good start. In the old days to get into the woods from Brooklyn we just went to Staten Island ! It was really wild in those days .More than that meant going to the Catskills. Have fun !!

mete,
Thank you. I completely understand your Catskills comment. Let’s not forget that good old Iron Mike is from there!

It looks like you two had a great time, pretty cool. So you've peaked my interest. What do you like about the F1 Pro over the original F1?

d762nato,
I love the 7.62 round as well, nice user name. I'll set it up in a list of what I like in the F1 Pro in comparison to the regular F1:

-The Lam Cos steel. I had seen so many great reviews on it. For the record they are right. My F1 Pro holds an edge longer, period. No question there.
-The stainless bolster (guard). I always hated that the f1 did not have one. Now don't get me wrong, the F1 never did me wrong with the thermold one, but I like a more substantial steel bolster.
-I liked the thicker stock. I am of the though process of, as long as the grind it right you can never have too thick of a blade.
-The belly of the grip is deeper and I have large hands.
-In the cross sections I've seen on Youtube (guys re-handling the knives) the F1 Pro has a lot of steel in the tang, more so than the F1. Once again, this really isn't a factor just something I prefer.
-The sheath seems a little more versatile.
-I liked the way it looks lol.

All that being said, I do not think this knife is a $250 knife. I would never pay that price for it. Don't get me wrong it's a great knife but not worth $250. I was ordering my son an F1 for $117 and the F1 Pro was for sale for $189 (these were on Amazon). They were the only seller with a price that low and the next lowest was around $275 so I contacted the seller to make sure it was the actual F1 Pro etc and they said yes. I contacted Fallkniven via e-mail and they assured me there aren't counterfeits of the F1 Pro yet and told me what to look for. I ordered it with my son's F1. For the extra $70, I think it was worth it. Came with their nice sharpener and a waterproof case (don't really need). Was a decent deal.

Thanks it is a good round my favorite also. The only Fallkniven I have now is the Tor bowie knife. I've read the Cos steel is some good stuff, I'd like to try an S1 pro possibly in the future. Thanks again for the well written reply on your F1 Pro I do like it as well.

Great pic, looks like a fun trip. The smile on your kids face sais it all. Love that F1 pro, wouldn't mind bringing one on my outdoor trips :) Thanks for thenpics and writeup.

Thank you for the kind words!

Well the turkey hunt this AM was exciting but unsuccessful. I couldn’t get them to crest this ridge to us from the neighbors property but it was a lot of fun calling and having them yacking back. The boy loved it!

Of course it turned into a make a fire and warm up/ play in the woods late morning (was only 25F on the mountain).

Your son's smile is something else. he looks to be having the time of his life with good ole Dad out in the woods. Keep up the good work out in the woods having fun is way better than being in a city.:thumbsup:

Amen brother. We get out every chance we can. We spent this AM out at a local farmer’s place ramming around for turkey. We didn’t have luck but had a beautiful doe that just walked with us, no exaggeration, for like 30-40 minutes. It was nuts. She came when we were calling and just started eating about 50 yards from us. When we moved she wasn’t spooked and just slowly walked and ate as we moved. She actually came into the path in front of us. Really cool. I took a few vids. I’ll post em up later after I YouTube them.

Thank you cut! He does love it. Deer rifle season starts tomorrow so hopefully we can get some venison together.

Hi! Very nice :)! I also believe it’s important to spend time outdoor with family and kids. A little bit like Christmas holidays, I think it’s something which remains deeply ingrained in our childhood memories :). I still dearly remember the hiking/camping trips with my parents in the Alps and the hunting seasons with my uncle when a kid. I also like the Fallknivens a lot and the F1 (old version) it’s one of my favourites. Took it out recently myself also. Not yet convinced about upgrading to a Pro, the “old” one it’s still going strong for my needs ;). Thanks for posting this! Take care.

All those shiny blades ! My first Fallkniven got a severe test .I had to remove and cut up a rug on a stairway .Incredible the amount of dirt ,especially sand that collects and a vacuum doesn't remove ! Sand from the winter road . Yes severe .The softer outer layers scratched of course but the harder center layer held up well . Still use it scratches and all .
Sand is very abrasive as I tell those who reload ammo - with an outdoor range , wash cases before resizing !! The sand picked up from the dirt will abrade even carbide sizers !

Herlock,
Thank you for the kind words. I agree that these are the memories he will keep. I've been packing them in heavy with my kids and wife recently. This next year I have a lot of family time planned. I deploy in Jan 2019 and will be gone a year so I'm trying to get ahead of the 8-ball so to say. I will tell you right now, there is no need to upgrade from the F1 to the Pro. The F1 will last a lifetime, no doubt. It is an amazing knife. Made me fall in love with fallkniven without a doubt. I am just a dork that wants what he wants. I like the slight performance upgrade and the steel bolster, but I'm a weirdo.

mete,
You got me! I do take good care of these blades. You should see my Ratmandu. That bad boy has seen some stupid stuff and it looks ugly. The black coating wearing makes it look particularly crappy. I am also a reloader and can attest to what you are saying about sand/dirt. I am in the northeast so sand isn't a huge concern to me, but when I go to sandy environments I am reminded why I hate sand.

Side note: Went out opening day and was absolutely tortured!!!!! We had 2 bucks literally fighting on the power lines across on the neighbor's property (different land than turkey hunting, I know people hahaha). Only 150 yards away. I looked at my son and said, "well buddy, it's not our land so we can't.." and before I could finish he said "integrity dad, it wouldn't be right, even if no one saw it". My heart swells with pride. He's a good young man. Anyhow I took pics of the 8 point and 6 point through my scope. Best pics I could get.

Wee man got his first deer! It was a small doe but I am proud of him. Perfect shot. Dropped after no more than 10 yards.

Congrats.. Great memories are made!! He will never forget all the time with ya in the "Wilds"... NICE!!! John

Thank you John. You are right. These are important times to make amazing memories with him. I wish my daughter was more into the outdoors and hunting, but we make memories going and getting a hot chocolate and talking. She just likes one-on-one time.

His face when he got that deer was so crazy. I don't who was more excited, him or I. We were such dorks about it. It was such a great moment.
