So today, a lady at work took the prize of "worst knife anyone ever gave me to sharpen." It was actually a nice knife... when it was new. It was a J.A. Henckels Santoku with the metal handle, Solingen-made. The edge was beat to hell and butter knife dull, but to take the prize, it had to be very special, and it was. There were two cracks in the blade starting at the edge which went HALFWAY THROUGH THE FRICKIN' BLADE. I told her to buy a new knife...

No pics. She stopped me in the hallway to offer me the knife to sharpen, and I declined on the spot. I didn't even ask what she had done to the knife. I've been sharpening other peoples' knives for a while now, and nothing fazes me anymore... broken tips, bent blades, handles beat to hell, edges knicked and dull as butter knives...

My friend tried to get me to sharpen his fake made in china sak ant got mad at me because it wasn't as sharp as my 0200......lol

I think I opened a can of worms! a regular customer asked if I would charpen few knives for him. I said sure. The first knife he gave me was a Packistani copy of a buck 110 not so bad but in no way fun. The next one was a some 3 bladed ninja crap out of Bud K ! I think Magnaminous has the right idea.Look at the knife first!!!!!!Then politely refuse.Well live and learn:D

I've had a few interesting ones. I suppose it depends on what you mean by "worst." The ones with significant amounts of the blade (~1/4+ of total length) broken off can be a challenge, so can the stuff with wicked chipping or sharpened a few too many times on a Chef's Choice. I think my least favourite so far was a double-edged cheap-o boot knife with a half inch or so broken off of the 3" blade. Trying to regrind all four bevels to come together evenly was a challenge.
