The WWIII Handle Maker Speaks

Well, our WWIII handle maker - or should I say, handle artist - read the threads about the WWIII, and had this to say:

I read the Bladeforums thread with great amusement. You have your hands
full. If it would help, I can vary the finish of each handle per the
owner's preference . . . Another
thought which may help you in making sure that your customers know what
they're getting would be to finish the two slabs on the prototype
differently. One side could be polished, the other side rough. I could
attach them using just pins and one of us could take digital pictures of
each side. We could then epoxy it latter (with matching handles) when it
had served its show & tell purpose. For that matter, we could use the
knife as a "finish mule", using varying degrees of polish or a polish on
one side and a bead blast on the other. On the other hand, maybe I
shouldn't open up any more cans of worms for you.

Well, I am honestly amazed that this guy is so willing to do flexible things. Here's the question I want answered:

DO PEOPLE WANT THEIR OWN CUSTOM WWIII, OR DO THEY WANT TO OWN ONE OF A SERIES OF HOMOGENOUS "FIRST RUN" KNIVES?

Granted, it may cost a bit more to handle all the logistics of customizing each knife, but we're willing if we're able.

I would like to have the blade beadblasted prior to bluing for a matte finish. My handle choice is dull/ beadblasted handle scales.

The ablity to choose blade and handle finishes is a great idea.

Craig,

I think the idea of a "show & tell" WWIII is a great idea. Perhaps some photos of the various options would help some of us with our final selection.

If you want, I'll post the pictures on the forum gallery. Give everyone time to look at their leisure without swallowing too much band-width here on the forum. I was thinking about giving the WWIII its own gallery anyway if there were sufficient photos to warrant it. Kind of a "conception to birth" sequence.

Just a thought.

Like Blackdog, I vote for the "show and tell" approach. And, Blackdog, thanx for offering to post the pix.

I am positive about a matte blue and a dull/ beadblasted black handle. If you want Craig, you can make up mine this way and use it for show and tell.

My vote is custom. You know my preferences. Dull green handle, bead blasted blue finish.

Craig, you are your kamis are to be commended for offering custom WWIIIs. Each one will be very unique and more "yours."

Great idea--I like being able to choose my preference for blade and handle finish rather than receiving someone else's idea of the perfect finish.

My preference is still the same: dull olive drab micarta slabs, & bead blasted hot blue finish.

Thanks for your patience, Craig.

Craig,
Show & tell! I like the idea of being able to look at the options. Feel free to use my No. 1 as the guinea pig if you want.

Steven F,

Posting the pictures is my pleasure. It gives the rest of the knife community a glimpse at one of the most beautiful, most functional and least appreciated blade designs of all time.

We who own Khukuris owe it to our fellow blade lovers to spread the word.

Pssst, hey brother, try one of these knives. You won't get addicted. Trust me.

Yeah, and the first one is free - you know where to come for more!

(just kidding, lest I get a slew of emails asking about why their first khukuri wasn't free!!!!

I think what I'll do now that the handle maker has spoken is design a form on the website for all WWIII customers to fill out and email to me. That way, I can get a stack of emails all looking the same that I can just pass on to Robert.

I'll announce the form URL as soon as it's built.

Aww Heck, me thinks custom is the way to go. The more I think about it the more I like the idea of a dull green micarta handle with a bead blasted hot blue finish.

How customizable (is that a word?) is the sccabbard? I don't think it would be too much trouble to make provisions for a small skinner.

Either custom or all of them bead blasted hot blued with beadblasted canvas or linen micarta handles.

The questionare on the GH site is probably a good idea. BTW it sounds like you found a great guy to do the handles! Marcus

Use the old low tech rust blue.Time is cheap in Nepal.Soloution is cheap.I could look it up,but it is U.S. primitive tech.

Actually, the sheath prototype was mailed back to EdgeWorks with modifications as per the forumites input. The one thing that couldn't go on - due to the non-conventional sheath design - was a chakma and karda. They'll have to stay in the standard sheath, which will come with the package.

And when the "order form" is ready, I'll post a link to it in a new thread and hopefully we can get everybody to fill it out. I'll also be asking for a deposit at that time, as once the knives start to get customized, they are, in essence, your personal weapons. I'll also post details about the expected delivery date. It may be that due to the initial complications with getting a new handle-maker after my friend had to back out, the delivery date on some of the higher-numbered WWIIIs might be January 2000. But, we are still going to push to have them all done before Christmas.
