So this bear-trap of a forum has once again seduced me into possibly acquiring an expensive knife. That said I have some questions about the xm-18

Are there any reasons not choose the spanto tip over a tradtional spear point?

If i wanted the 3in model as opposed to the 3.5in model does this affect handle size?

Are there any pics of the combo color g10s i.e. the blue/black and green/black

and which finish, is the sandblast or the beadblast more like "stonewashed"? Tumbled finish (shiny) Bead blasted (Matte) , and sandblasted (darker matte)

any other notes/thoughts are greatly appreciated

Thanks guys

My wife surprised me with one last year and I have to say it is without a doubt the perfect compromise of "fit and finish" and toughness. It walks in the most respected knife circles unscathed. If you can find one in your size and color do not pause just get it. The spanto tip seems nigh invulerable to damage. I feel like that is his signature blade shape so I would opt for that!
TC
also some of the Busse guys (non folder) have kind of adopted it as their unofficial folder until the Busse folder is released next.....

Dude, just plan ongetting a couple different ones and be done with it!

Dont torture yourself!

Rick is offering the replacement g10 scales, so if you do not like the color you can change it.

I have the satin spanto blade and I really like the blade shape.

Whichever one that you are able to hook up with, you will not be unhappy with it. If you end up not liking it, you can sell it for no loss!

fyi - generally speaking, a stonewashed finish wears better (less likely to show scratches).

I LOVE the spanto blade. I have a 3 inch bladed XM-18, with the bead blast blade. The bead blast blade is NOT my first choice, but I got it from a knife dealer. I am waiting for the one from Rick. And since some one has already posted a link to The Knife Cellar, there is no need to repeat the link. And my 3 inch blade XM-18 IS my avatar. That is my knife. The picture is from Blue Line Gear. I hope this helps.

thanks guys,

so by the pictures it looks like the 3 in model fits the hand just as well as the 3.5? this is my biggest concern.

Max,
I would rather have a knife to the large side rather than have a knife that is small in my hand. I have the 3.5" version of the XM-18 on order. I have several other knives in the 3.5" size that seem to "fit" my hand and feel OK clipped to my front pocket...

Like TKC, I saw one and jumped at it cuz they go so fast where ever you see one for sale... so I didn't get exactly what I would have straight from Rick. Mine is a black handled bead blasted spanto tipped flipper version. I personally would have gone with a regular drop point recurve flipper myself. The Spanto tip is cool but it's so thick it's harder to put a sharp, steep edge on it. It's probably great for sticking through car doors and such but I hardly ever have the need for that.:)

Also, I would have gone with a stonewashed finish. I just got mine back from a new beadblast about a week or two ago and I'm already getting very small speckles of rust on the blade near the thumbstud. I haven't been close to any water with it but it is the moist season in IL so who knows. I tuff clothed it this morning before work and got the rust off so hopefully the Tuff Cloth treatment fixed that. I also agree that scratches would show up more on the bb ones compared to the stonewashed version.

I picked up some extra scales from Rick when mine was in the spa too. And if I can figure out what size torx screws are in it I'll be able to swap them out.:) (If anyone knows what size they are please post or pm it to me. Are they even torx?)

Hard to go wrong with an XM-18. The 3 inchers are few and far between,,
3 1/2 inchers a little easier to find( not easy,,just easier :D )
Lotsa scale colors to choose from if you wanna swap 'em out. Royal Blue, Navy, Cranberry, Toxic Green, Safety Orange, Black, Black/Blue, Black/Green, Dark Green, Grey and a new Tanish/Brown color.

notdos...
