In 1976 I really started collecting knives. My first custom was a Randall #1 with a stainless 7" blade with stag a handle. I never looked back since then.
I was wondering when did you first start collecting knives and what knife was your first one ?
Good collecting!

1978. It was a Buck Mustang with Pearl Handles and a Holster sheath from the Buck Custom Shop. Still have that knife.

though I had many SAKs previously... it all started for me when in 7th grade, when, instead of my monthly allowance, I asked for a Leatherman. It was 1989. Then I got a Boker Canoe. which I lost to the depths of the Rio Grande about two weeks later. bummer.

I've had knives for pretty much all my life. I had a variety of knives, most of which I lost, when I was a kid. There was one in particular, however, that kicked off my interest as an adult. That was a Buck 112, acquired in 1979. Man, I loved that knife. Abused in every way possible and it held up like a pro. That 112 is still the standard by which I judge a hard use folder.

I actually only started what might be considered collecting knives in the last couple of years. Before that I only bought knives that I had planned on using. I would use them until they were worn out, throw them away and buy a new one. You probably still couldn't consider what I do as collecting, since I tend to use all the knives that I own. Some to lesser degree than others. Some of the knives I will be getting in the next couple of years will see little or no use.

The first knife I purchased would have been in 1962 (talk about old:p) which was a no name throwing knife. The next year I bought a machete and a Puma hunter (can't remember which model). Then in 1965 I bought a Buck 110 and I still own that knife. Blade is a bit worn down from sharpening, but it still works great. Since that time I have probably bought between 30 and 40 knives and still own 15 of them.

Yeah, 1976, the year I was born....I started collecting knives ( good quality ones ) in about 92', thats when I got my first Italian auto, same year I bought a Cold Steel SRK cuz I thought it looked pretty cool, though I was disappointed by its performance. It was in 92' when I started making knives as well, so after some practice on crap steel, I just reground the SRK to my liking. Still have both today, along with too many other knives that I never use....oh well they're good for impressing people ;)

Since I still have and use my first knife I would say 1959.
Dad gave me my first knife then when I was 4. I was a normal kid who blew up, lost or broke anything else I had at that age, but for some reason I still have that small stockman. I have been a serious collector since the mid 70's.

Ur right Jacko, I didn't answer the question...

The year was 1995...I was 18...The knife...A Spyderco Endura...

Ho hum, my yuonger days...:p ;)

I started when I was around 12 or 13 (1990). I started my fascination with fixed blade knives, but I picked up a pocketknife collector's handbook and started hitting the flea markets with my mom. In high school, my pocketknife collecting ended when I started buying a lot of fixed blades. In college, I could barely afford gas, so I didn't buy anything. I hasn't been until the last three years that I've been able to start stockpiling.

1973, Grandma gave me Grandpa's knife when he died, day of his funeral, thats all it took!!

Arch, how could you lose a canoe in a river?

July 1971 in San Francisco; 2 Italian stilettos, a Svoboda dagger, and some fireworks from a gift shop on Grant Ave.

Minutes before I had seen a kid (a little older than I was then) being slapped around by bigger boys. The kid went into the store to buy the same type of knife as the larger stiletto.

My dad was a butcher so I was introduced to knives early. Always had a pocket knife and bought new knifes every chance I got. Although I had Bucks and Gerbers, and the like, I Bought my first "real" knife if the early 70's. A standard Randall number one, Then the same style made by a fellow named Chase in Texas. It grew from there. Last year my ex wife gained possession of around $10K worth of knives, some of which I'd had for 30 years or more. She sold'em to a gun and knife store for $280. End of story. Boo hoo.

1976 the year after my dad was killed in a plane crash my mom gave me the two knives he had on the plane with him, an Edge Stag Handled Buffalo Skinner/Bowie, and a Puma White Hunter that was on his hip, that the coroner had to remove from his thigh,(crash impact drove it thru the sheath and into his leg),(sorry if I was a little to graphic he died in the end of October, so I'm still fresh from the anniversary, 27 years later):(

But I've never looked back since, my dad gave me my first knife at 8, it was a SAK.
