Today was the Hammerin at the Yellow Rose/Redeemed Steel Network. Billy Salyers runs this. Redeemed Steel is a charity that does mission work and is building a trade school in Guatemala. This school will teach metalworking to the community and the plan is to create good jobs for the people there.
These are very high quality people with a great mission.
I've been doing this event for several years giving demos and tutoring makers. There is also a build-off that until this year has been all forged knives. Billy contacted me after Blade Show and asked me to compete and find him 3 other stock removal makers. I chose Amy from Warlander, Scott Davidson from Solid Rock, and Carley Perkins who is my new apprentice from Darlington Edgecraft.
Today we built a knife each starting at 9 am and due by 2:30. I'm so proud. We all finished gorgeous knives. Amy's was auctioned for the most $$$. Myself and Carley were 2nd and third in the $. All proceeds went to Redeemed Steel.
Folks this is amazing. There was a lot of talent there including a mentor and personal hero of mine Gerry Drew of GL Drew knives.
Consider this. And this thread serves a dual purpose. Carley first used a grinder less than 4 month ago!!!! She is without a doubt the most naturally talented apprentice I've had. That is high praise! Her knife today was perfect. It had great grinds, a tapered tang, and Padouk scales with liner and pinstripe. She killed it. Her knife auctioned for the third highest and the competition had years of experience on her.
So please welcome Carley to the Fiddleback Forge Family!!
