The Zen of my knife

I have owned my Umnumzaan for 15 days. In that time I have learned to sharpen, take down, adjust and handle the knife. I initially had a difficult time opening and closing my knife until I learned how to properly hold it. My right thumb has a bruise under the nail from learning to flick it open as does the tip of said thumb. I have cuts on the right side of that thumb from learning to close the Umnum one handed.

I have now mastered opening and closing this marvelous knife. Even with both hands. Because of my incompetence, I was thinking of selling this beauty and buying a Sebenza. That has all changed.

I had an Al Mar folder that was stolen from me. I bought another and carried it for fifteen years until I lost it. One of my sons gave me a Spyderco Native that I carried for a number of years until I bought the Umumzaan. I am now very connected to this piece. As much as I'd like to buy other CRK knives, like the Professional Soldier or the small Sebenza 21 Insingo, I am going to stick with just this one. I have bonded with this and I will grow old with this. I am at peace and all is well.

I understand exactly how you feel.

I kept finding "the one" and wanting to only carry one knife as I bonded with it.

But....

As others have found and myself. It surely is an addiction...other knives will cross your path.

Sooner you embrace the addiction, the better you'll feel.

I very much enjoyed this post. The Mighty Zaan is a beautifully designed knife. I held off on getting one in favor of the large Sebenza, but when I finally did, happiness!

I believe it's the one and only knife I own that I would not ever consider selling.

Congrats on yours

I have spent the last 25 years collecting things. First it was guitars, then watches and now handguns. With the thought of simplifying my life, I have sold or given away all but one guitar, three watches and seven handguns. Those possessions seem to make sense to my new simplification mind set. Collecting knives does sort of make my mouth water. Although, centering my devotion just to this one knife does feel completely satisfying.

I admire the restraint but I think the resistance could be futile.

Glad you're enjoying the new knife.

Good on ya if you can keep just the one...

however, realize this place isn't exactly a beacon of self control in the sharp and pointy department ...:D

You are so right about that!!! :D

OP, if you're going to live with just one knife, you picked a good one! Use it in good health!

Just one thought, heaven forbid, that you lose that beautiful Um. As I write this, my Um is here with me on the couch arm beside a nice standard Zeb 21, a Zeb Insingo 21 w/mircata inlays, and it's little brother, the small Zeb with identical inlays. You stated you lost one knife (it could happen again) and being without one of my CRK's would leave me feeling kind of naked. Me thinks you need a back-up CRK and I would recommend the Insingo model, either the large or small variety -- what a truly marvelous blade design. I, like many, prefer the Insingo over the standard blade...

Just like my normal carry handgun, a custom 1911A1 in .50GI, I have other 1911's for different purposes. I have my back woods 1911 in .460 Rowland, a 10mm 1911 that I like to carry in open areas, a .38 Super that I like to shoot paper with and train, plus many other, mostly the others are WWI and WWII handguns and Colt collectibles from National Match to their wonderful Colt Ace in .22 LR...

So you see, you need a back-up, plus a few different blade designs and lengths for specific applications...

Boy, it's fun spending your money, GPBob, instead of my own.:D...having said what I did, I do see another (or several others) CRK's ending up clipped to your denims somewhere in the not-too-distant future.?....cya

Are you the same JacktheDog who sells excellent firearms on several of the gun auction sites. If you are, I have purchased several 1911's from you....cya

You make an excellent point. The majority of my handguns are duplicates, so having a backup makes sense. OK, so maybe I'll buy a small Sebenza Insingo. You ruined a perfectly good Zen moment.

I know this place is a bad influence, but I'm with you on this for my own personal favourite, the small Insingo. Any other knife I buy will take away time from it. Where's the sense in that?

Please everyone, stop making sense. Maybe I'll just have two and carry them both at all times.

I can do the math: 1, 3, 7, 15 :D

Congrats on finding your peace, GPBob. Still searching for mine...hoping
it lays in a Large Sebenza with Micarta Inlay.

I got one recently, and I just cant believe how beautiful it is. I intend it to be my number one edc.

GPBob, I try and relate it to what I've red (spelling) about crack addicts-once they take the first hit there hooked and always chase the dragon to get that same high. My examples....look at Franzdom and his CR's.....or look at Lone_Wolfe and his Hinderers??? Get my point??? Wait for it....Wait for it. LOL:D

her Hinderers and CR's as well, but for me so true, it's been an unbelievable ride that only started last month :p

Oldbugr, this is off topic, I have been a fan of VWs for over 40 years. I had a Rabbit for 18 years and have a Golf TDI for going on 12 years. I had a great 70 VW Bug until my ex-wife wrecked it. Is that your turquoise bug in your avatar?
