I always enjoy finding an older knife, and matching up with old literature. I usually don't go in for these kind, but I think the name and the box design kind of hooked me. Kind of art deco I guess.

It has an older stamp SCHRADE/WALDEN/N.Y., and no pattern number on the back. Not sure if it is from the same year as the brochure or not. The little leather purse is in remarkable shape.

If the box is original to the knife (and I have no reson to think otherwise), note the address of Walden New York. The plant didn't move to the Ulster Works in Ellenville until circa 1958. I would say that narrowing a knife down to a ten-twelve year time span is good 'nuf!!

Nice one! Be sure Larry V. puts it onsite!

I was hesitant to bid, and didn't have much time to make up my mind when I saw it, or do any research. Luckily I found a very old thread from Sept. 2006 (thanks again Michael, Charlie, Dale, MM, and Eric):

It showed the stamp to be valid. Found the brochure after the auction was over, and was delighted.
I'll email a JPG to Larry. If anyone ever wants a picture of a knife I post, feel free to nab it.

Hmmm... doing some digging here.... 1954 - 709SHA (old No. 48) - 3 1/16" Senator Pattern. Each knife packed with purse in individual box. $5
1953, ditto. 1947 it is listed as No. 48, just like in the flyer. 1955, ditto, 1957 lists S709 (no shackle). Not listed in 1959 or 60. It seems they discontinued the pattern at about the time they moved to Ellenville, keeping the smaller cousin 778 (2 7/8") in the line of open stock knives. Predecessor Before Baer bought Schrade (1940 catalog) was the SS7099I SHA.

Thawk did in fact send me the picture to post and I will.
I have a soft spot (guess I have a few) for the old gentlemans knives.
I told Thawk I have a special one of my grandfathers with the chain fob. He was a bartender for the Copley Sq Hotel in Boston for over 40 years. Wore the knife for many years with a pocket watch in his vest pocket. Until wrist watches becam fashonable. Picture a victorian hotel lounge in the center of Boston with a huge horseshoe shaped bar with 1 bartender and 5 servers (al male).
I might have a picture around..

I'm not usually one for boxes, but that one is extra special! Very nice, thawk!

That is a sweet combination there hal. Im usually like you and not a fan of that type of knife but given the right circumstances I would have bid too. Great knife and box and purse for that matter!!! Good score. That box should work well for pictures great find!.- Joel

Nice addition to your collection, well done on securing the deal, fantastic condition.

Nice find Thawk! Most times the boxes from that era and before are harder to find than the knives, it's fantastic that you found them in such pristine shape.
