Ive been buying those giraffe leg bones that I find at the knife shows. Most have been laying out in the african desert for years and have had the lion knaw marks ground off but still have some of the weather cracks. They have been dyed multi colors and have been stabilized with the best smelling epoxy Ive sniffed. My question is this: What kind of dye and epoxy do those african people use? It is intoxicating. I want to try it on my own bone stash.

bruce i think its done her. k&g does that work. they just sent me a flyer with dyed stablizie griaffe bones.

Hi Bruce, I also would really like to know how they get the multi-colors in the bone. At the Guild Show I spoke with the K&G people and they said they would NOT dye giraffe bone. They will stabilize it, but won't dye it. They will sell the dye, and they told me how to dye it, but thats just one color. I really like the multi colored giraffe bone. Maybe someone can tell us how it is done. Tom Lewis

They are definitly stabilized with epoxy of some sort. They all come from africa. I buy them from African Knifehandle Supply but he doesnt know what is used. His uncle does the stabilizing for them. It smells very good like plastic. K&G now carry the same thing. I got the flyer yesterday too. It is very nice bone and the scales are big enough to make more than one knife handle. I cant wait to try mine.

Tom, Nice to hear from you again!

I talked with the guys from Africa a few years ago about how they stain there bones. They told me that they would heat the bones up some and then drop them into a bucket of dye,That way they would get good penetration of the dye.He didn't tell me how he would do multi colors though,at that time they were not offering multi colors.I didn't think to ask what they used to stabilize with then though.
