The RPK Blues.

I'm not even up to writing a song about it. You do it.
The school teacher has driven me crazy. HK's, Valmets, FN's..AR's....High Standards...

I was researching the RPK when he came over. He sorta wants one too.
But what good is it?

Well, in the standard Soviet Short I suppose you could command one city block. You'd get a little further out there with the 74 ammo..but both that and the .223 leave me a little cold. I couldn't even take over Zortman with an RPK. Pretty pathetic, really.

First of all, try finding one. Oh, there's a 400 dollar Romanian around....an AK with a long barrel...and there's a Yugoslavian around for 650... reciever unknown but I suspect just an AK .

The RPK reciever is thicker at vital areas. It was Russia's light machine gun. I heard people hated carrying it because it weighed a lot, and you got shot at a lot if you had one....

Supposedly, new Russian RPK AK's (Vepr's) are coming...both to a place called Atlantic arms and hopefully to Robinson ARms. What they'll want for these is anyone's guess. I checked the specs on Robinson's standard 20ish length barrel Vepr AK (with RPK reciever) NINE pounds. I don't know about you, but the thought of a NINE pound AK seems ridiculous to me unless it's set up as a RPK. They also carry a sporter 308 Vepr which seems pretty good- looks like a Valmet. It'a only 8.5 lbs. Trouble is, the mags are 5 and 10 count right now...
The Expeditionary rifle seems a little lost in the lower 48: Do we have any land mass left to launch an 'expedition"? Maybe they mean to retake the inner cities in 2020 AD.

The very first time I opened up an AK action I saw baling wire inside and assumed the factory had packed down the bolt. I even put a screwdriver on the wire in an attempt to loosen it. Then I realized that was no packing wire; THAT WAS THE AK.

All desire for a Valmet dropped out of my beating breast. And that goes for Galil too.

For a number of years the Daewoo was considered a great weapon, a kind of hybrid AR18, with AK piston. But no one bought it. It dropped out of sight in America. From what I can tell, Robinson makes the Expeditionary rifle and their new X Whatever rifle from a kind of AK pistion action ala Daewoo- but the details are not mine. Actions are known. There aren't many new ones. That's just what they appear to be is all.

It's been a long time since I had the firearms blues, the RPK Blues.
It'll pass. Spectre just posted the link from Keltec to their new .308 and it does look good; though I think i'd pass on the 32" barrel.... It takes FN mags and they are plentiful. If it's priced right they'll sell a lot. Because when you start getting into 700 bucks for a exotic AK, you might as well shoot a decent .308 bullet chucker.

I have a mongel NHM AK, and a great milled reciever Norinco Hunter with the polytech stamp. I have a M1A. I've sold too many Garands, AR's, Mini 14's, SKS's and even a little M1Carbine to complain I've been underrepresented, or unarmed. And I don't really believe anymore that 'just one more gun' will change life at all.

Still, an RPK could control my backyard, couldn't it??
Did I mention I don't have 200 dollars, let alone 700??
Well, it never hurts to dream a little.

We'll all be clattering around with this stuff and some bureacrat will push a button and kill us all anyway.

You know, earlier tonight, I was looking at AIM's website. You can get a 5.45 WASR AK pattern...well, for probably $350 or less, once you go to the FFL (I was actually thinking I might buy one of these for Jordy, eventually- cheap ammo and no recoil)...

Unless you are firing full auto, ain't no good reason for RPK, man.

(edit) While we're on the subject of bargain guns, AIM also has PA-63s for a great carry pistol for well under $200 [will have higher recoil due to light weight, though], and CZ-82s for barely more than Makarovs, both in the terrific 9x18mm caliber.

I'm in agreement with Spectre. If you're intent on FA, there may be better choices as well. I've witnessed enough smoked barrels to realize that easy replacement of such is definitely a good thing in this case. If I ever figure out how to get my old HD to talk to my new desktop, I may just post the infamous "M16 on Fire" video. (Hell, I got the ROMAK burning one time and that wasn't even cyclic.)

MOLOT builds Kalashnikov clones with an RPK-type receiver, hence the weight. I have one of their early .308's and I've been extremely pleased with it. It wasn't a rebadged clunker -- it was a firearm built with the American consumer in mind that just happened to be designed by Russians. It was around $600, but it was worth it. It looks nothing like an RPK, but that wasn't what I was looking for at the time.

I'm looking forward to the Vepr's return to America. I have no need of something in 5.45mm, but I'm pleased with their build quality and they happen to make one. It will be an interesting toy.

The RPK AK's allegedly are the most accurate- because the reciever is so stiff. Robinson adverstises their Vepr 308 as most accurate AK out of the box.

looking over that Keltec, the 32" barrel is only 40" OAL rifle. Amazing. I must wonder if a .308 Winchester can truly benefit from a 32. Gotta wonder if it really maxs out around 28".

Dave: haven't forgotten your mineral reward.

I was on the hunt for a good "supressive fire" Yugo RPK years ago and all most got one along with 3 Russian 75 rnd drums. I hesitated and it got sold out from under me. I dont feel too bad about it. It really weighed a ton...... with out the loaded drum in it. I think the barrels were a bit thicker in material cross section as well as 1.8 or 2.0mm sheet steel recievers......I think.
I ended up with a new milled Bulgarian SLR-95 (import version),25 30rnd mags(Yugo), and a 100rnd Chineese drum that i picked up for $45.00 new in the factory bag w/ Chineese manual and way too much cosmolene. I think the whole kit ran me around $550.00 6 yrs back. It all runs with typicaly boring Kalashnikov reliability. I dont regret missing out on the RPK with this set up. Out to 400m or so I think this will suffice for "in that direction" supressing fire till I win the Lotto and get my MG-42 with 2 spare barrels in .308 >:)

That Kel-Tec has me curious with out question. Thanks for the link Spectre.

Quick read of the thread topic, and I thought you said no RPGs in the Munk compound.

I mean, I understand guys wanting to put holes into a few targets. Still, I thought stockpiling rocket propelled grenades was a bit over-the-top even for Montana.:D

But what do I know? Those zombie cougars are tough. Even with all the HI chopping steel littering the Munk Compound, you can't be too careful.

Tom,
When Pappy was still alive, he had khuks hidden all over his property for snakes and 'such'.

You really need what the ANA has here: SPG-9s and 82mm mortars. Not to mention assorted PKMs and RPGs!

And that's just to defend our perimeter!

Spectre;

If I ever become wealthy, you and your bride can live at the 'new' munk compound and be in charge of security. I only ask carte blanche to make the weapons go 'bang' whenever I want.

munk, check out my latest: Browning 1919a4 (a6). No stinkin' Commie® brand machineguns at my house, nossir.

HI falcata on floor added for khukuri content... :)

Very good stuff you have there...you should visit Montana and bring that with you.

:D

"Last Stand, Falcata in Hand" thread, maybe. I appreciate the invite. We'll run those mountain-cats of yours off with the BMG.

vepr's have always sparked my interest and i'm not a fan of full auto rifles. i'm of the opinion that full auto is for sub guns and mounted/support guns. ideal sub for me's the elusive parker hale pdw. anyone ever see a picture online that wasn't black and white? in its absence i'd take a greasegun for better agreement with astra's vintage motif (though not quite as vintage) and the low rate of fire. i heard the mutant cougars wait for the sound of the mag dropping before going offensive.

EXCELLENT! Though, perhaps maybe we can just get together as a group sometime, go shooting, and then eat some good food, and enjoy some ginger ale or adult beverage of choice...

That's not entirely true, the Japanese army uses basically that same rifle. They produce it here under license by Howa. IT's called the "Type 89."
I got to handle one recently and its really cool. IT shoulders well, magazine change is faster and easier than the ARs. (Howa makes better mags than GI AR mags) If it were in 308 Win, it would be the #1 seller in the USA, bet. I ought to send Howa some emails

I had a Daewoo DR200.

One of many firearms I've sold without really any reason, like my Astra pistol.

I didn't know that about the Japanese weapon, Danny, very interesting and thank you.
After the small arms tangle of the last war, they must have learned something. Figures Spectre had a Daewoo. "Knowledgable" people were supposed to like them.

What the hell, nothing worth having is easily attained. Just mortgage the home and get a Mk48 Mod0. My son speaks very, very highly of them.

....Someone's going to buy a 'device' from Russia one of these days....

It's late in the night and my eyes are going crosseyed ....I also thought it said no 'RPG's' as well...and then I looked again and I then said Oh you mean the Ruchnoi Pulemet Kalashnikova...every house needs a Ruchnoi Pulemet Kalashnikova or even a Ruchnoi Pulemet Kalashnikova skladyvayushchimsya prikladom obrazets 1974g ( except the caliber is a bit sucky)...
right that's it ..I'm seeing douible..sleeep calls
