Agreed, with some form follows function, but that's not my philosophy. I want form AND function.

Thats the reason I spend so much time making sure that the knife fits the sheath like a puzzle piece, especially with all the nicely shaped micarta Jerry is coming out with lately.
I might be able to put out a sheath thats very generic for a generic price, but it wouldnt have the fit and finish that I have to have in my work. I've been approached many many times to make an uber cheap no nonsense sheath similar to those that came with the 1st generation small Rats, but I just cannot do it. I've repaired way too many of those, and seen far too many start to fall apart. Thats not the image I want to put fourth. Anyhow, those fellas that are making them now are plenty happy to make more and for a price that would make you go weak in the knees.
I use the same THICK top grade leather in these "production" sheaths that I do in my customs, it doesnt come cheap, and the labor involved in just sculpting the throat of the sheath is amazing. I'd actually put them just below my custom work in fit and finish. I tried once to push the point of a knife through it and its very difficult to do, if at all, especially on the belt. I had much more leverage on my bench vise.
Now that said, some people like me want multi taskers.

If the same sheath fits various knives then cool! I dont have to spend 120+ on three sheaths, but just 45 and I get one sheath that fits all three knives. It may not be pretty but its functional. And the res handled Howler fits in the sheaths without a lot of effort, the blade slides in very easily, its the res C handle thats wider so it meets some resistance when it comes in contact with the belt loop on the sheath. That requires a little grunting and fussing to work into place, the tip of the blade hits the end of the sheath much sooner, but because the geometry is the same it wont want to push through the welt.
If its only one thing I wont do is suggest a knife for a sheath knowing that it may cause injury to the sheath or to the person, ugly is one thing dangerous is another thing entirely. If there is any chance that #1 that knife can get loose from the sheath or #2 that the knife will exit the sheath tip first I wont even think about doing it.
I'm gonna go cut leather now, before the Hog's hunt me down and lock me in the shop!
