Well, considering how prolific a poster I am.. I went ahead and got a basic membership. Watch out, I can post in around the grinder now !

On that note, what's everyone up to this weekend? Myself I should be picking up an order of steel from my local suplier (100 feet of 3/8 x 1, 100 feet of 3/8 round, 100 feet of 1/2 inch square) and I'm going to try to spend much of the weekend churning out new tongs for my shop.

I may drive out to hartford CT and buy a 3 foot hunk of 5.5 inch round 1018 for the anvil for a DIY power hammer, the price is right, i couldnt get it cheaper at a scrap yard currently, but I'm not sure if i want to spend 100$ on a piece for a power hammer that I may not get around to finishing for more than a year >_<

Of course you do! At least, I would... seems all I do is start projects and never finish them!;)

Of course you'll buy the steel.

It may take you a year to finish the project, but,,,,buy the steel,,,,you have to start getting material sometime

Yeah i'll probably buy it. Heck I may do what Jock Dempsey over at anvilfire suggested and get 2 so i can build a treadle hammer and a power hammer both... because the price is right, 25c / lb including the cutting fee. Hard to beat that at scrap prices. Sure it'll take a tank of gas to get there and back, but probably worth it.

Talk about the price being right. With that anvil that you got from me, I got the steel from my old employer. It's a 6" dia. 75lb bar of 4140 that had the 2nd cut measured incorrectly, and all of a sudden it turned into scrap. I asked the boss, and he said "take it". I got the hold down steel out of the dumster, welded them on heat treated the top 1" and voila, an anvil :D But still, their is nothing like the real thing,,,,,,300lb Fisher :D

I'm going to set my alarm early and drive out there tomorrow, long drive, but cheaper than i can get the stuff for as cutoffs from Nightingale metals in lincoln RI. I was talking with the floor manager there and he said they get shorts and cutoffs all the time, but that it'd be around 35-39c / lb, which adds up fast for a really big piece. Will still probably be worth staying in touch with the guy when this source of even cheaper stuff in CT dries up (soon too, they've only got like 40 feet of the stuff at that price)

I actually got a new anvil last weekend myself. 150lb peter wright for $150 at the new england blacksmiths spring meet, i couldnt pass it up, its a nicer anvil than the 126lb peter wright with the welded on face that I've been using.

Still need to get you up to my place one of these days Larry, so you can see my workspace and stuff.

Good thing i called them before i drove out this morning. They would only give the price quoted if I bought the whole 17 foot bar of it... I'm not about to spend that much money =D Probably end up cheaper to buy it fom Nightingale down the road in Lincoln.

LOL, 17 ft would weigh in at about 1322 lbs. I don't know what you drive but, my pickup would be a bit top heay with that on the overhead rack. Make great hammers though.
