There has to be a better taco.

There's lots of 'taco' style Kydex sheaths. However, when you put on a belt clip the knife rides way too high ... for me. It's hard and frankly dangerous putting the blade back in, because there's nothing between your skin and the blade tip while guiding it in.

Some people go horizontal, but I'm not interested in that. You can also do the two pancake thing and mount the clip on a longer back pancake, but that's a pretty wide sheath.

What sort of alternative mounting methods are there?

You could make the body side of the taco taller that the outside so finding it re-sheathing is smoother.

You could also work it a longer like a dangler style but you'd have to get it perfect. I think if it was too long people will find it awkward.

You need to make a stand off so you can mount the clip higher. Its basically a bridge profile, simple little life has a vid on it on youtube and i have even seen guys do a small aluminium press for doing that small "bridge" section for mounting the clip.

D Danke42 - I think what you propose is the right idea. The devil is in the details: Just how do you mount the clip on that higher part? Rivet placement and such puzzles me.

Case_D Case_D That's the most practical idea: a leather belt loop. I might use coated webbing tho.

FredyCro FredyCro I watched that video. The stand off is a good plan. I wonder if I could invent a standoff that also lowers the blade? Hmm.....

jux t jux t At first I thought you were joking, but maybe that's not such a bad idea. Easy to try.

I'd ditch the whole Tek-lok and just fold a loop in the Kydex.

You'd probably want to make a few adjustable proto's to test and find the ideal height.

I also do the leather belt loop. The way I like to do it is a quasi dangler in that there's a piece of leather which wraps around the top of the taco and is attached at the kydex rivets then a belt loop is riveted to that such that it can pivot around the single rivet if sitting down or crouching. Sorry I don't have good pictures of this most of the ones I do are on pancake sheaths where it's more of a "backplate" rather than a wrap around mount for the loop.
