Just spent two weeks sightseeing the west. S.Dakota, Wyoming, Montana , Idaho and Utah. Up in Glacier I spotted a dot in the middle of the Lake at Many glacier. I thought it was a Moose at first. Through my binoculars it became clear , a bear. I watched it finish its crossing. It was the first of two grizzlies seen that day. The only one I got a pic of. Not much of a photo. Took with a 10x optical zoom. The bear was proably a mile away.

That IS cool! I knew grizzly's could swim but had no idea they would venutre that far out from shore.
Thanks for sharing!

Just read about a sow in Glacier that they are going to put down.Seems she is too friendly and approaches people. Not huff and puff but, just approaches them.
I am sorry to see this sort of thing. She is throwing a couple of cubs every other year.Sad:(

Nifrand. I liked western Montana better than any place visited. It was stunning. I plan on going back . I want to kayak or canoe some of the rivers there. The Little Blackfoot looked promising. If not for the copius amounts of snow, Id consider moving .

Too bad about the sow. I wonder if someone had been feeding it.

Excellent picture dipbait. What is the transition line in the water? Is that ice or just the way the sun is reflecting off the water? I like it, it really makes the composition work.

Its not ice. Its either choppier or the angle is changing with distance making the chop more visible.

Grizzlies are so close to polar bears they've been known to mate.
And polar bears swim so well, they are practically sea mammals. :)

Really cool picture! I love catching odd photos of animals when they have no idea I'm there.

Nice spot.

I was once canoeing a river in the Northwest Territories when I saw what looked like a beaver crossing up ahead.

Boy was I surprised when it climbed out and turned out to be a bear. It's nose was turned away from me and it's head didn't look especially large because it had nothing near it for perspective.

Neat pic... watched a grizzly on the alpine slopes across from Many Glacier Lodge about three weeks ago, a beautiful silvertip. Earlier that day, hiking up to Ptarmigan Tunnel we noticed fresh bear droppings, and a family behind us saw a sow and two cubs about four metres off the trail, which is close enough to raise your adrenaline levels somewhat. I remember hiking up to Granite Park Chalet about 45 years ago, just a year or two after a grizzly had killed some campers up there. A grizzly had been denning behind the chalet where a snowdrift covered the back balcony. We slept in the chalet that night (it hadn't opened yet, but the shutters and windows were open), but didn't get much sleep.

Neat picture. As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of this pic taken in Southern GA
