Who: Steve D'Lack decided to put together a show in Santa Barbara, at the Fess Parker DoubleTree. For those not interested in clicking the hyperlink, here are some of the knifemakers in attendance: Ankrom, Bill... Bennica, Charlie...Bergh, Roger...Boguszewski, Phil.....Buchanan, Thad....Carlson, Kelly.....Centofante, Frank...Coffey, Bill....Crawford, Pat....Davis, Barry....Dean, Harvey....

Where: In other words, it will be a BIG show, attracting top makers and collectors. The Fess Parker DoubleTree is located RIGHT across the Pacific Ocean, allowing those that want a morning swim(it will be cold) in the ocean that opportunity. Santa Barbara is situated on an east-west trending section of coastline, the only such section on the west coast, between the steeply-rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the sea, and having a Mediterranean climate, it is called California's "South Coast", and is also sometimes referred to casually as the "American Riviera."

It probably won't be an inexpensive trip for those coming from out of town, but should be vastly worthwhile. Anyone who IS local who has intentions of arriving after Friday will probably miss out on some breathtaking work. If this gives any indication, the Santa Barbara show is the ONLY show that I will attend before Josh Smith's show in June.

The show promoter has generously allowed for us/me to pass the hat on behalf of Jerry Rados....I will have receipt book on hand.

You aren't coming to Blade this year, STeven?

I wish Steve D'Lack well with his new show.
There's some outstanding makers attending.

I attended a wedding reception at the Fess Parker DoubleTree several years ago and it's well suited for a show. And there's definitely worst places to spend a weekend than Santa Barbara.

Decent pinot and chardonnay too.
I like the avocados !!!
Guacamole addict here;)

The sunday art show is right across the street from Fess:thumbup:

What are the door prizes?
I couldn't find any descriptions on the web page....

STeven,

I saw the add for this in Blade Mag... It's not just a knife show, is it? I thought there were like arts & crafts or something else involved...

Anyway, it sucks that it's on the same weekend as the OKCA Show in Eugene... :grumpy: That's my one show a year for sure that I'll get to, or maybe Blade West...

Anyway, let us know how the show goes, pics and stories and all! :D

Joe,

This show is a knife show, with other types of artists involved. Many art shows will have a knifemaker or two…..so this is just like a reverse.

I for one, am OVERJOYED that this show is the same weekend as the OKCA, it allows me to have an option besides slogging back up to the PNW for the same old/same old year-after-year…..I have spoken to Wayne Goddard and Dennis Ellingson about recommending changes to the format, and have been stonewalled for years….my hope with the Santa Barbara show is that it does very well, and siphons off the best makers from the OKCA show…there is no sense in the approach that the OKCA Board has taken…they seem determined to kill the quality of the show for the sake of “the Charter”…which is stubborn old men speaking….not leaders.:grumpy:

Of course I will write up the new show, gotta get you guys interested some how, right?:D

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

STeven -- how come we never saw a write up of the show you attended a couple weeks ago?

'cause it pretty much sucked, and there is not a lot of good to say.....makers didn't bring their "A" game, I felt like crap, and only stayed for two hours.

I'll get around to it, but am just not that motivated.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I think this may be my last year at OKCA too. The collectors are very few anymore since Dennis chased off the big name makers.

It isn't just Dennis, Bruce.

The Board of Directors of the OKCA feels that the Charter trumps the numerous complaints of "big name makers" and collectors who have not been attending the OKCA show for years....you know that I love that show, but the negatives outweigh the positives in a major way. The board is not dedicated to putting on a show that attracts major talent, and subsequent major collectors.

Those who are SERIOUS about making, selling, and buying knives will be at the Santa Barbara show...those that want to complain about not selling knives and tire kick will be at the OKCA show.

The economy has forced me to get more serious in my show choices as I think most full time makers are doing also. The board doesnt seem very concerned with the big hitters leaving. They are factory and antique pocket knife collectors and need some new blood on the board.

I checked out the ad for this show. That's a pretty darn impressive lineup of exhibitors!

I just finished up some work at the Fess Parker Double Tree. It is a great facility, and a classy place. It also now has some weather based irrigation controllers installed by yours truly! I will be there, but most likely Saturday, I am about an hour away in Simi Valley. I always said, if I was ever homeless, I would live in Santa Barbara!
