Hit a deer lastnight
still alive on the ground; had my R&P knife on my hip. Did the right thing, the knife functioned perfect; the deer was mostly undamaged I will get alot of meat off her. She was roughly a 2year doe; really good sized.
processing the meat later today, I will use the R&P knife to finish her out.
The choil came in handy last night while gutting her; once i reached the sternum and ribcage i was able to bury the blade in, using the choil like a saw serations, it tore right through cracking the ribs apart with ease.

I was also thankful for the fenixLD20 I had attached to my R&P sheath; I was able to signal cars drawing their attn. to myself and my vehicle to the side of the road during the extreemly snowy conditions. It also illuminated the gutting process

sad to hear that, but you did the right thing and had the right tools.

always better to be prepared for the worst

bummer about hitting it, cool that you'll get some meals out of the experience.

I'm curious how you "did the right thing" as it's likely I could find myself in a similar situation some day. Are you saying you slit it's throat or used a handgun, just curious. One time my wife and I saw a deer with her front leg dangling (obviously hit by a car) but she got away to quick and I wasn't about to get out and chase her on private property. Felt really bad for her though.

My knife was the best available means to use for killing her, I slit the left side of the throat severing the Carotid Artery (you will hear a hissing sound when you sever it). It will take any where from 2-5min roughly for the amount of blood loss needed to fecilitate death to occur.
Make sure during and after severing the Carotid or jugular to be clear of the animals hooves; they are very sharp and can rather quickly cut or stab you.

That's one way to bag a deer. Glad to hear you were able to save the meat and put the doe out of it's misery. I've hit one also, but the deer limped away before I could get to it.

The only deer I've hit left half of his left thigh in my grill/engine compartment and the dude still took off like a bat outta hell onto private property... All I got was a hefty shop bill, glad you got some meat and that she didn't go to waste!

Thanks boss
Never a good feeling to let a wounded animal wander off.
Found a doe on our property which curled into a ball and starved to death after someone missed a shot and took her bottom jaw off; she was unable to eat so she just staved to death.
Its common in our neck of the woods for indivduals to lose the thrill of killing deer and up the sport by only going for head shots, Ive also heard from some it is a means of sparing usable meat.
To each their own

First deer I ever killed was with a Buck knife with about half an inch busted off the tip.

I dropped out of a tree onto his back and....

Just kidding, he was hit by a car and his back was broken. He was dragging himself around in the road and while my brother was busy trying to calm the driver I had to dispatch the deer.

He was a monster too. The knife was like a butter knife so I had to repeatedly stab him in the neck until he bled out.

That ruined me on hunting to this day. My whole family were big hunters except me. I hunt from time to time but the feelings of remorse are too strong when I take an animal for me to enjoy it.

For me it's subsistance only.

grill guards are the shit.

I wish I had a grill guard when I hit the deer... It was on I-15 in Idaho and there was a herd spanning the width of the freeway about 4 deer deep. Somehow we only hit one (that I could tell) I thought for sure we'd hit 10+ they were so packed together on the road. A grill guard definitely would have been nice...

Here in Tx., guys put on the "front porch". Monster pipe and diamond plate contraptions that stick out a foot and a half and weigh as much as the truck.

You could hit a T-rex full bore and not even know it, let alone a deer.

lol we use regular grill guards here in indiana. to bad it tore your vehicle up but at least you will get some good food out of her. i mean can you really beat back straps :)

Agreed brother.

Crowdog, I think you did the right thing, and then at least you took the time to not waste the meat since she was dead. Good move my man. I know it's not fun to take an animals life while it's in your hand/arms to keep it from suffering. God bless brother!
