My supply is boring. I have white, white and more white. I have several rolls of black and brown but I so much don't use them that I don't even remember what size they are. I have white in size: 138, 207, 277 and 346. I do have a roll of 207 in natural but I don't like it. Size 207 is what I use the most, top and bottom and always have 2 rolls on hand.
Three or four colors but lots of different kinds. I have leather cord, braided nylon, nylon, sinew, cotton and a few others.
I use 1mm waxed twisted nylon and waxed flat braided nylon the most, mostly in black or red. For finer stitching I have .8mm flat braided. I use that for liner rolls and for inlays.
I've been buying thread from Maine Thread Company. They sell waxed polycord. It seems to be plenty strong and just enough wax (not to much). They have 31 colors in 6 sizes. They offer a complimentary size/color chart with samples of the wax polycord. I've used it on a few sheaths. If anyone has any experience with this thread good or bad let me know.
Thanks, John S.
I use white 1.4mm Mox Poly Braid Waxed thread that came in a 400m spool , so I guess I'll be using it for a few more years considering how many sheaths I make
I considered trying a Black thread , but for me part of the challenge is getting my stitching as close to perfect as I can .
You can't hide your mistakes with white stitching on dark leather , so it teaches me to concentrate .
Ken, you're spot on. I try to stitch everything to the best of my ability, but light colored thread really pushes you to nail it. I like light thread quite a bit but black or red seems to always fit my dye jobs.
Black with yellow
Red with black
Black with green
Black with blue
About the only time I've used light thread was with browns/antique and if the customer specs it with black dye. Black thread also goes well with light snakeskin, red thread is nice with black sharkskin, etc
