A tall old man, totally dressed in black, long white hair, carrying a scythe is standing on the corner.Makes me wonder if he is the real McCoy or prepping for hallo'een.

Last week I drew up my final will. I made my Patricia Louise total benificary & my son executor. She will not need this huge house or the bulk of our antiques. Son suggests an estate sale-room -by- room .

I soon realized that I have accumulated a small fortune over the years. Guns, gold & silver, tools,a new 8500 W full house generator & on & on....

Son will get Patsy into an apartment that accepts pets close to a large Save-A-Lot grocery & A Big Lots. She'll get a $1000 widows benefits monthle VA benefit check, her SSI & 1/2 of mine.

Anything I have forgotten ? There is ample insurance to cremate me & I want 1/2 of my ashes spread at my robilini palm & the rest in the front yard.

I have been blessed with a wonderful wife & a good life. Am aproaching 8o & try to continue living a Christian life .

Uncle Alan Waiting for God.....

I hope your son is OK with being in control of everything and your daughter getting it all.
If he's well off and OK with it fine, but I've seen a lot of trouble from this sort of arrangement with even close families.
On a more cheerful note you could live a long time yet! But, anyway you have a great attitude it seems and I wish you well.

Excuse me Jill but Patricia is my wife. My son is loving, caring & dutiful. Today he spent over 2 hours replacing my lawnmower enging. Like I was,He's an accomplished salesman. In addition to salary & expenses,he has earned a $5,000 monthly bonus almost the whole year.

Thank you for your concern .

Regards, Uncle Alan :)

Oh that's good then. I for some reason thought you was speaking of your daughter. I was a bit preoccupied with eating my supper while reading your post and typing my reply. Best of luck to you again and it's never over till it's over!

i am sad and happy at the same time having read your post.

sad, you feel you will be leaving us soon, and behind a family that will no doubt long for you to fill the void you now occupy.

happy, you leave on your terms, your life in order, your family cared for.

god speed my friend.

Depending on your state of residence, you may want a durable power of attorney for your son. And, you do want an advanced care directive or "living will." I would suggest assigning your son as primary beneficiary on the life insurance and your wife as second. Your son can use the proceeds to handle final expenses and bank the rest to cover his ongoing costs of administering your estate. If you have agreements with him, you may wish to reitterate those to him in a signed letter. This has no legal standing against your will or life insurance designations, but it may help him if some people criticize him for carrying out your wishes. Finally, just sit down and document all of your financial details, account numbers, pass words, pin numbers, etc. not only for your bank and investment accounts but also for bills you pay regularly, etc. Even such details as your bladeforums password. Obviously, this becomes a very important document which much be protected. Give it to your son and let him put it in his safe deposit box.

Oh, speaking of safe deposit boxes, if you have on then talk to the bank and get your son on as a joint tenant and be sure with the bank that this is done such that he will be able to access the box after your death as those boxes are otherwise sealed until the estate is probated.

Uncle Alan,
A living will and trust is the way to go. That way there is no issue as to who gets what. I think Gollnick said it right. If you have any vintage knives or tools your son does not want, I will pay for shipping. Just let me know how I can help. LOL. In reality, I pray for your health and many more years on yer feet and breathing and cutting stuff with your knives. God bless you sir.

Durable power of attorney would cease at my death. By vesting in my trust of my son,he should avoid probate.

My only knife of real value is one made by J A Lafquist , Eskilstuna Sweden. Hoping to find a Swedish Craigs List & market it. I have pictures of it but cannot figure how to paste & mail it. If someone would kindly let me send the photos to them,we'd display an antique work of art .

If it would help, I can sell the knife on ebay for you. You could sell international on ebay, but I am not too sure about customs laws, but can figure them out. I sold a good metal detector and shipped it to France and all went well. Cutlery may require a litle more intricacy. If there is a reserve price you have to get for it, we can set that too. If it does not sell at that price, you do not have to sell it. Let me know if I can help. I will only charge you the sellers fees. My time and effort would be free of charge.

Uncle Alan,

First off I hope that you're just being a good planner and not leaving us anytime soon. With the things that I've learned over the last year with my mother I have to say that don't take advice from anyone but a good elder law attorney. Inheritance is pretty easy to set up, but things can get really confusing as far a setting up living wills, DNRs (these can be very detailed and confusing), durable POAs, and most importantly protecting assets in case you have to go to a nursing home or otherwise need to rely on MedicAid. Very arcane laws are involved in this last part, and this last part is the quickest way to lose that small fortune you've saved up for your loved ones.
