No, this isn't about whips...

All these posts on sharpening kinda got me in the experimenting mood. My BAS needs a good sharpening (although it's dull as a brick, it still outchops just about everything else I own), so I thought that I would experiment on some of my other knives with the convex grinds before I killed an HI khukuri.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I have been using belts nailed to a 2 x 4 with unsatisfactory results. I got some softer leather from Hand American, and what a difference that made! It conforms much better to the shape of the grind, and together with the Chromium Oxide (green) paste, really polishes the edge up nicely.

I now have a very nice convex grind on my folder, a CS Trailguide, a nice high carbon steel folder, and the BAS is whimpering, because it knows that it's next. Or maybe it's snickering, these knives can get some serious attitudes sometimes...

See you guys later, I'm off to polish a BAS...

That chromium oxide stuff is the bee's knees ( this expresion makes me seem older than I really am--and for our Ausie friends it's the dog's bollux) great stuff it is! I rub a bit of it on heavy paper or 600 or 1500 grit emory paper and I'm still amazed at the results. Incredible stuff for certain!

It comes in a waxy base as Veritas Honing compound, and HandAmerican sells it in a water-glycerin base which I've not tried.

Whatever form you get, it deserves five stars!!
You can't go wrong with this stuff.
