I recently picked one of these up at a barn sale.

http://www.omega.com/pptst/870_HANDHELD.html

I couldn’t find anything out about it since it was an estate (death) sale. But the price was so good I figured I could risk losing a few dollars if it doesn’t’ turn out to work. I put a battery in it and everything “seemed” to work.

I don’t have a forge set up yet, but hope to in the future. So at this time I would like to use it for checking the temp on my tempering oven and my quench tank, etc. Eventually I would like to use to monitor the internal temp in my forge.

So first I wanted to ask those here who know more about these things than I if I am right thinking this unit should work for these applications.
Secondly, what accessories should I get for those applications? It came with no thermocouples.

Seems like the basic K ones that were supplied with the unit (which I can purchase as replacement parts) are a good start. Seem reasonably priced.

Any value to the “general purpose mini probe” they sell?

Any more preferred sources for thermocouples that you would like to share?

I guess if the thing turns to have some problem, I could always toss it and still be able to use any thermocouples I purchase in the future with a new thermometer, so no real loss…

So any thoughts on this unit and how I should go about this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Going once, going twice...

No takers, huh?

alrighty then, I'll see what Omega says.

Thanks.
