I realized that I never actually made a conscious decision to mostly switch to traditional knives.
While I like my traditional folders, I don't actually require them to be traditional.
What I do require in a folder without a sheath is
3.5" or less closed ( mostly less )
Under 1.5" wide
Clean and simple lines
A " normal " blade shape with " normal " grinds
A relatively thin blade of an easy to sharpen Steel
Lastly a relatively high value and functional quality to cost ratio, preferably under 50$

So they don't " HAVE " to be traditional, but there are a lot more traditional folders that fit this bill than there are modern.

Now that I think about it, does this mean that I actually do require my knives to be traditional 🤔

Only if you want to talk about them here in this particular sub-forum.

If I talk about a knife here it's definitely going to be traditional.
The deal is that I realized that I mostly switched to traditional folders without consciously deciding to and I wondered why. For 95% of my knife carrying life I carried a modern folder , but last year a generous forum member ( r8shell ) sent me an imperial Barlow that I dropped in my pocket and basically never looked back.
Writing this thread has made me realize that I may not buy any more modern folders, and weather I want to or not I must prefer traditionals. There's a new 17$ US made Gerber lockback I've been looking at, but it's only just barely modern enough not to belong here and that may be the only modern-ish folder I acquire all year.

Because you prefer them?

But I didn't really know that I preferred them, I thought that they were just what offered the qualities or features I like. Now it's really starting to sink in that I probably do prefer traditional folders more .
