The mosquitos are horrendous . I,m not even going in the woods much these days . I prefer to stay on the practice field and set up some 2D targets to fill full of arrow holes . I only like to spray deet when I must as anything that smells that bad cannot be good for you .

All this having been said something got me good . Just behind the armpit in an inconspicuous spot are what appear to be seven ireregularly spaced mosquito bites . Except they are surrounded by a splotch of redness . I have never had a reaction to a bite like this . There is the classic
bump of a skeeter bite save they are not particularly itchy . They only itched a bit after showering . There are no chiggers where I live . The main afflictions are skeeters and if you are lucky a few black flies will show up as well .

What are the symtoms of the tick bite that carries Lyme Disease?
Seems like there is a bite surrounded by a red circle but I can't recall exactly.

If they get a blister in the center, then it blackens, it could be a spider bite. One spider gets up your sleeve, gets pinched between your skin and clothes, panics and bites defensively. It would be unusual to have a cluster of tick bites without a tick still hanging on (mind you,in the early stages ticks can be very small, even full of blood they would look like a poppy seed).

Arrr! ye been wanderin' around the bilges on the Black Duck agin, cap'n. you know ain't safe down there even for a good ol' pirate.

why, matey's, there's things down there that would make a demon scared out of it's red suit & horns. i recollect last time we had to rescue cap'n kevin from thet port bilge up forward he wuz broke out in green spots fer a week.

This was a real splotch and not circular at all . Would a tick bite be itchy ?
The area is not known for ticks . That having been said my mutt picks them up occasionaly so it is not entirely out of the question . I have good eyes and have not noticed anything amiss .

I have already had it so I,m immune . On the other hand I am preparing a special shot just for you . Kronckew where is that bilgewater ?

I think Kevin correctly identified an allergic reaction, not Lymes.
Interesting about allergies- you can tolerate exposure without incident until-you can no longer tolerate exposure. Wierd. The body's had enough, and there is no way to tell when that is until the threshold event.

Kevin, I've noticed the first bites of the season seem to cause a worse reaction in me than later. I'd assumed my body was 'used' to it, but that may not be right.

Any West Nile in Canada?

We have West Nile warnings in my town right now. They've had two dead horses and a bunch of dead birds. Evidently, most healthy folks just get flu like symptoms. Some get much worse though.

In my late twenties I caught viral encephalitis from a skeeter, and was lucky enough to come out with only short term memory loss. Head hurt so bad that I wanted to kill my self; I was lucky that the wife was home at the time (it's hard to make rationale decisions when your brain is in a vise).

Sounds like an allergy to me. I have always been very sensitive to deer fly bites. However, as I have gotten older and become a working stiff without all the summers filled with stomping through the woods like I did as a child, I notice that bug bites bother me a lot more. A deer fly got me a couple times at my mom's new place that is still a little overgrown. It became a swollen and red hard lump with a black spot at the bite itself. It took well over a week for it to go away. RIght on my inner thigh so my pants irritated it all day.

Good luck, Kevin.

It is starting to rear its head here . Interesting thing is the relation between crows and robins . The crow gets it and dies . THe Robin gets it and lives therefor making it more likely to pas it on to humans . Lots of crows and robins here . I haven,t seen any dead crows which is a good sign .

Funny thing is I have had hundreds of bites on my back to the point my skin was crawling with the discomfort . No redness . It may be as you say that my body had enough on that particular day .

I always felt good about where I lived in that there is not that much here with designs upon my good health . No Rattlers , Afreakin bees or spiders of ill repute .
I have to intensify practice as rendesvous season is fast approaching . That means lots of deet and washing up after . I don,t even like to eat with that stuff on me . I usually spray clothes and hat as opposed to skin and apply it sparingly to face .

Interesting! (He says in his best detached medical voice. :D) Sorry to hear of this Kevin, but interesting. Now I have heard, and distinctly remember reading somewhere, that there are places up in the Great White North where the mosquitos are so bad that they can kill you, really.

I heard of some guys that went up there with some pack animals around the turn of the century and picketed them out overnight, and when they came out of their hidy hole in the morning one of the horses was _dead_, killed by mosquitos. What a place, where the forests and lakes are so beautiful and yet you can be made miserable by tiny bugs. I gather that there is so much water up there that they just breed like mad. Where's your flamethrower when you need it?

when me and my dearly departed were walking the dogs down by the river, she'd always get bit & i would not. her dog would get fleas/ticks and mine would not. the only major difference was i drank guinness which is high in the b-vitamins, and my dog got a 1/2 teaspoon of brewers yeast suppliment mixed in his food (also high in b-vitamins). she'd get annoyed & poke me. she lives about 20 miles away now, and she still gets bit. she was a veggie, took a general vitamin suppliment, but it was not very high in b's.
