 ;) :D

Well, The verdict is in and there can be no surgery until the coughing ceases. I have severe allergies and the onset of asthma. Get to be on prednisone again, but can't use that before surgery either, so they have to figure something else out. So off to the pulmonary guys sometime in the next 6 months(yes, it actually may take that long down here). This is almost amusing to me. But is all seriousness, I think I may have to find a better place to live. Not really sure if there is such a thing, other that Antartica. :D Really!!

The funny thing is that I've tried all the natural allergy stuff and it's useless for me. In order to get shots, it'll cost me another $80 a month that I really don't have. There has to be a breaking point at some time.

So here's the question for discussion or any input anyone has to offer:cool:

Is it worth putting at least $5000 into my house to bring it up to allergy standards.....ie, new windows all around, full house air purification system....heck we may be talking about $10,000. And then I'd have to stay inside all the time.

Or does it make more sense to figure out a place that has better air quality and less of the stuff I'm allergic to.............well, that would be Antartica for sure...............and pick up and move. The funny thing is that I can pick up and move anywhere I want. Just have to pack the boxes and load the truck and drive away. The house will sell down here in record time and I'll have $130,000 to put down on a new one........maybe pay cash for one. Being ex-military has it's benefits you know..........pack and move in a heartbeat, absolutely no roots at all.

Well, as usual any input you guys have will be really worth the reading. If you happen to live in a cheap area with great air quality and a VA hosp within reach. Let me know. :D Or any other possible ideas I haven't thought of yet. I'm tired.........really tired........can't even think straight anymore........what can I say.

Hey Gin...could be dust mics....do a search on vacuum cleaner which filters through water...that may help. :)

Find the place where you have the best chance to make a stand. Pacific Northwest- or the Rocky Mountain West- I don't know. I don't know allergies, I have them, but they don't knock me out.

But anyway, find the best place for you, and then make your home. Don't invest 5000 bucks in a place where you're already half knocked out of the game.

Talk to a decent doctor who understands your condition and can make a realistic reccomendation about the proper and best environment for you.

You can get a great, A GREAT house in rural Montana or Wyoming for 60 to 80,000 bucks. You sell your home there for 130,000 and you should be looking good. Plus, Small town Wyoming and Montana is going to be a trip for you- or maybe Eastern Washington, or in Washington in the rain belt but away from the large urban centers- I don't know- you'll have to weigh all this.

Good luck, God Speed, Good Health and Good Cheer.

Fortifying your house is a tough call . It kinda makes your house your world . And that can get to be a very small place . Have you tried on-line allergy help groups ? Sometimes sufferers hyave unique solutions people don,t think of . As for moving ? I leave that to wiser heads than my own .

Shoot me an email and we'll talk allergies and asthma, have good news for ya from someone that's been to hell and back with it all.

Good luck,

Billy

I'd look for a new habitat. I came here to AZ as a 7 year old because my Dad had asthma and my little sister was showing signs of respiratory problems. There were about 200,000 residents in Tucson and about double that in Phoenix. My elementary school had a dirt playground and little vegitation. It currently has grass and large trees, Mulberry I believe. As more people came they missed the native vegitation from their old homes and transplanted some of the stuff here, bringing the pollens and other irritants with them. Some plants are illegal to plant here for these reasons. I know many folks who relocated to AZ for health reasons and developed other allergies later on. I am lucky to not suffer from any allergies and am very sympathetic to those who do.

We were in Tucson from 62-64, courtesy of Uncle SUgar.
I had no respiratory issues when we got there, but contracted
Desert Fever as a 6 yr old.
Desert fever: A disease also called coccidioidomycosis (CM) due to a fungus called Coccidioides immitis. About 40% of people infected with this fungus develop symptoms. Most often they have an influenza-like illness with fever, cough, headaches, rash, and myalgias (muscle pains). Of those people with symptoms, 8% have severe lung disease requiring hospitalization and 7% develop disseminated infection (throughout the body).

It left some scarring in my lungs, enough to always get comment from Radiologists reading my films.

Military retirement money seems to go the farthest in the Western states,
Montana, Utah, NM, Wyoming, etc.

Good Luck, Gin

Just for the record, I get hit hard out here in WA in late summer. Last year something changed and it was late spring instead. It's some kind of tall grass that gets me.

The rest of the year it rains too much for the pollen count to rise.

Folks around here with allergies swear by local honey for reducing symptoms. It never worked for me, but everyone else seems to think that it does.

Hi Gin:

For what it's worth, think twice about those allergy shots. I went through them for almost two years. My allergies are now worse than before the shots.

Thanks, Steve

I like your house Gin...wait about 10 years and I'll buy it.

Well, I'm just developing allergies, so I guess I don't know too much about what you are going through, but when I start feeling all stuffy, I take mucinex, the one with the expectorant. It really clears me up, but again, mine are mild. I don't know if it plays well with High BP, if that's an issue. Also, stupid as it may sound, my mother bought me this salt lamp thing. It’s about a ten-pound block of pink salt with a night light bulb on the inside so it lights and stays warm. I keep it about six feet from my bed at night, and I haven’t had a really bad sinus headache since I got it. It seems to help, though I couldn't tell you why.

Gin, in all seriousness, is this recent or chronic?
There is a point to this.. (just my penny worth)

Thanks for all the insight. I've had allergies all my life, but they have severely escalated since moving to the valley. In fact they tested for the valley fever and TB because they are so bad. Weird. Last year wasn't nearly this bad and they cleared up over the weekend of the Konvention........maybe we need another get together down here.

The higher, dryer air seems to be the best thing going. I"m really allergic to molds and dust and then about everything else too for that matter. seems I couldn't get just a 1 reaction on any of my tests.........4+ was the norm..........Oh, well. Life goes on. Flagstaff is an option, but don't think I can afford it, so we are looking into Cheyenne, WY. Karen would be really close to Dad then and that would be good.

Nasty, you could buy it now and rent it out............:D

I'm headed out this AM to get a portable air purifier for the bedroom and also some face masks for cleaning. Too bad I didn't save a gas mask from the good 'ol days............LOL.........bet I could go to the surplus store and get one. This could be fun.............answer the phone with it on............go to the door when the bell rings...............I could have all sorts of fun.:D

I can just see some religious door-to-door salesman coming to your door and you answer wearing a surplus gas mask (and little more :foot: )....
FANATIC: Have you been [gasp]
GIN: Thank god you're here. Did you bring the masking tape?

Linda's got you on her prayer chain and I'm sending up smoke for ya most every day.

Heh.

Gin, sorry for the troubles. I love most of WA and much of Oregon- both hilly AND near the sea- but don't know about pollen count and such. Good luck.

John, WILL live in Alaska one day
