They took my bali!!!

Last night, I was driving through a small town with one headlight burned out, of course, I got pulled over. Was about 8 o-clock, and dark out, my skeleton black jaguar with custom pins in the back seat... One officer comes up, asks for licence and registration, and if I had any weapons... I said I had two pocket knives on me (two cheapies I always carry, both 3 inches) cop sounded suprised "You have TWO!?!" I didin't know I left the bali on the back seat, so said no when he asked if there were any weapons in the car... After telling me of the butterfly in the back seat, he asked if I was in martial arts... nope, but am teaching myself balisong manipulation...

After checking for warrants, they had me stand outside the car and took both my legal folders, one cop held them while the other patted me down and searched my car for any other weapons. Didin't check the folders to see if they might be autos or oversize though. Didin't have anything else in the car. Both cops were really polite and explianed that I could try to get it back by visiting the station. I understood it was leagal to own as long as it wasn't concealed. (I'm in Colorado)

Today, I went to the police station to try to recover it... Told the lady at the desk that a pocket knife was confiscated the night before, and asked if I could get it back... got "I don't know anything about that" Explained what kind of knife was taken, and without hesitation, "Nope, thats an illegial knife."

I want to try to get it back, but only because I know what to do if I buy the 42 I have been drooling over and saving up for... any tips?

BTW, didin't get a ticket for the headlight, because I just picked up a replacment light that was in the car. No penalty or ticket for possessing the balisong.

My advice would be to get a friend from out of state to buy it back from them. They'll usually auction off the illegal weapons. I know I'm paranoid they'll take my balisong. I live on a university campus. We wouldn't even be able to carry a butter knife here.

Hey that's too bad!!! At least it was only a Jag. and you did not get a ticket. (you should try to get it back again) People around here are pretty one minded I have asked several cops if they were illegal and once I explained a balisong was a "butterfly knife" they said it was illegal. I have also asked around at different shops and asked if they were planning on carrying balisongs and they said it was illegal. But there are several local places in CO where you can get them!!!

Hey -- What school do you go to??? Greeley Central HS, Greeley West HS, North Ridge HS or UNC??? Please let me know. You can email it to me if you want. (mmtmatrix@aol.com) I will explain why I am asking later --

By the way -- Welcome to the forum!!!

Thanks

Well, thats too bad.

At least it wasn't a BM42 or something more valuable. You really should try to get it back, if the person at the counter won't help, ask to speak to an officer. If it is legal in your city and state, I don't understand why it was confiscated considering it wasn't concealed.

Luckily for me, I live in a relatively lax state, plus I already have an excuse...

Never give up your property without a receipt. No matter what the item is, legal or illegal, if you ask, they have to give you a reciept including the officer's name and badge number.

If you haven't been a problem otherwise, don't look like a problem, and are polite but firm about the receipt, that will often result in the officer just deciding to "be a nice guy... THIS time." The reality is that he doesn't want to deal with the paperwork. The other reality is that if he issued a receipt, then when he gets back to the station and does his paperwork for the day, he will be reminded about that cool knife he picked up and have to turn it in instead of accidentally leaving it in his jacket pocket and accidentally taking it home where it might accidentally fall into his desk drawer and accidentally be forgotten.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned that.

WallPhone, my dad was a cop for a while and I can tell you that he saw knives confiscated more than once that didn't quite reach the station, or get mentioned in the report, due to "forgetfulness." I'll wager one of those cops now has a nice new Jag to play with.

mmtmatrix: Sent you an email, and heard a story once from a knife shop owner in Ft.Collins about cops persistantly harrasing her for selling numchucks--she took them to court and won... used to carry balisongs but didin't because she couldn't afford another lawsuit to cover them. Have seen pawn shops and the like with jags, and a store that used to be in the mall carried china cheapies.

Gollnick: Did ask for a receipt, but didin't insist on one... Kicking myself for that now because the only record I have of this even happening is what I know.

Hey Wallphone, mmtmatrix!! We should all get together sometime, flip balisongs, skateboard, lift weights, play basketball, football etc. Oh yeah, I forgot, this has to have knife material:

Will the thermal oxidation stuff ever come off of my 42??
I like the color blue but it is only on one inch of one of the handles, like the silver a lot better than the multi-colors.

Hey what's up Cam? We will have to get together -- Don't forget your any my favorite pastime... I don't think I have to remind you

Yes, I got your email wallphone (and sent you an email) The owner of the Ft. Collins knife store is great ... she's a friend of mine and I think she is going to me my future employer. (I am serious -- I will let you all know about this later) I don't know if you know but Rocky Mt. Knife Co. up in the park has a HUGE assortment of balis (I am also friends with them) That's where Cam and me got your 42's but we had to pay full retail.

CAM -- The oxidation we put on our 42's will come off but it is pretty durable. I got the color spectrum kinda figured out so if you want I could help you out -- With just blue (and you can always polish the color off -- just use some wet&dry sand/emery paper and finish with a 400 grit where holes are and 240 grit on the sides (about what it origonally had when new)

Hope that helps -- Email me if you need more/dont understand.

And again Welcome to the balisong forum you two!!!

How could I forget our favorite activity

There is a store across from Rocky Mtn Knife Company: (well not "exactly" across from RMKC)

"Great Wall Gifts"
Park Place Mall, 2nd floor
145 East Elkhorn Avenue
Estes Park, CO 80517

I have more info if you want it. Talk to you guys later.

Oh, I don't think I feel comfortable taking sandpaper to the 42, I've taken sandpaper to other balis of mine and the results were horrible.

Boy that sucks! Bet you'll be very careful next time you think about lending him something, did you ever get another balisong?

Did your friend get into a lot of trouble?

Welcome to the forums!
