After meeting Carl and getting to see the infamous peanut, I knew I had to have one. I ordered a Case cv peanut. CV steel, in a fat guys pocket, may tend to get a little corroded. I bought another peanut, with SS blades. I figured they were nice but not for me. My father got the SS model, I gave the cv to a member here.

I was surprised when I got a Remington single blade nut from Carl. It was small but as the old saying goes, was good enough for gummint work. It served as work duty, but after awhile I noticed that I got along just fine without my other folders. I would switch out the nut with my Charlow or 73 when I got in my truck. After noticing that I was forgetting to do that when I got out of work, and actually left larger knives at home a few times, I knew my father liked these small knives for a reason.

A couple months ago, our very own Sitflyer surprised me with his generosity by sending me a single blade Damascus Case nut. It's Damascus blade enthralled me, and set me off on a hunt.

I was floored when I got another package from Carl. Inside was his Damascus nut and a note. I was excited, then realization set in that Carls ever present peanut was no longer in his pocket. It seemed strange. Knives are just objects but this one carried some history and it didn't feel right that I was the new caretaker. Looking it over I wondered if Gollum pondered the Ring like I was this knife.

I just wanted to share some pics of my peanuts, all gifts from two very generous men.

Wow what an awesome gift. It's an honor to be the Bearer of the Nut, you do realize this? With that comes tremendous responsibility for a piece of Americana. This is like being gifted John Wayne's sixshooter or Stetson!

Congrats... And more detailed pics when you get time? :)

Yeah, the Damascus on these is mesmerizing and needs to be shared. The photos look great on my phone I'm going to try to repost them.

I just bit for a little canoe pattern in a group buy from a pawn shop. I must admit, I may have misjudged the peanut merely on size. This little 'Winchester' is but 2.25" long, and danged if I've not used several times now. It's like NOTHING in my back pocket.

Going to have to fondle the peanuts the next time I see 'um, and maybe get enlightened a bit.

I gave this a heck of a lot of thought. When the Grand High Muckba's arthritis is getting to the point of not being able to open the pen blade of his peanut on a bad day, and on a so-so day the main blade gives him a love bite, it may be time to pass the baton. Age and health issues like that make one think about passing the 'nut to the new standard bearer. I thought about a general giveaway, but I hd misgivings about that. But having shared some nice lunches with Dan, I'd got to know him pretty well. Enough to know he's a good man. If it was time to pass on my peanut, I'd rather it went to someone I know will take care of it. That man was Dan. And so, Dan will move to the inner sanctum second level. They will call on him soon as they find the damm midget that ran off with the car.
:D

I'm sure this was a well thought out act. I'd do the same - to a friend who I know appreciates something that was special to me.

Sorry to hear about your arthritis, it gets us all eventually. Adapt to life's changes we must.

Does Dan realize there will now be an annual BF pilgrimage to his home now to see The Peanut? It will be hard on his carpets, but this is part of being the 'Nut Bearer... I'm sure he'll understand.

Carl--what a wonderful gift. I'm sorry you no longer find it convenient.

Dan--what an amazing acquisition. Do you happen to curate at the Smithsonian? :)

After discovering this porch, I quickly realized that the peanut was a meaningful representation of what we love about traditional slip joints. In fact it was the first knife I bought after stumbling on this site. I now own four of them, and carry them quite often. I can't imagine a more meaningful gift for a traditional knife knut than Carl's beloved! A great act of generosity, and I have little doubt that the precious is being passed on to great hands!

And so with such a small talisman is passed a huge responsibility. To train and be ready to take on the mantle of leadership of the cult. Are you prepared to become the active High Muckety Muck while the HMM emeritus watches how you shepherd the cult?

I can attest to the sheer ease of carry and cutting ability of the little Remington single blade nut. This one I got free as part of a promotional in package with 8 - 50 rnd count boxes of Remington Golden Bullet .22s probably 20-25 years ago. At one time it was pretty much my do all everyday knife. It's had several trips through the washer and dryer simply because it's real easy to forget its there until you reach for it.

I've even lost it and found it later in the house or in a pair of jeans on more than one occasion. I'm just glad I still have it. It's a great little knife.

Congrats and condolences on being passed the sacred Peanut of the Priesthood. Bear it will and with honor. With great privilege goes great responsibility. Don't forget the continue the chronicling of said Peanut's adventures.

Very true Amos, I'm not sure Dan fully comprehends what he's gotten into. Frodo had no idea what he was in for when he became the Ring Bearer. It's not likely Dan fully knows what lies ahead as the Peanut Bearer. His entire life will now be changed forever. :)
