Thick handled kitchen knife?

My wife had a hand injury some time ago - and doesn't have full motion of her hand.

A kitchen knive, with a VERY thick handle, would help her a lot.

I'd love to hear recomendations from the folks where which kitchen knives have the thickest handles, and provide the easiest grip.

A henckels five star has a pretty thick handle but it slims down alot at the end, I don't know if this is a problem (I'm sure there are knives with thicker handles)

The Chicago Cutlery set I got at wal mart had really thick handle scales that might help if she has a hard time closeing her hand all the way.

The OXO "Good Grips" line of knives and other kitchen tools was designed specifically for people who have difficulty gripping things. The knives are not high end, but the handles are very comfortable. Not only are they thick, but the rubbery texture means that you don't have to grip hard to control the knife. I don't have any serious hand problems, but my hand can cramp up when I use an ordinary potato peeler for a while. This doesn't happen with the OXO peeler.

Keeping the knife really sharp will make things easier too.

iSauer had provided you with the best suggestion available. eknifeworks.com has the best prices that I have sen on these products and there are a ton of them, all with fat cushy handles.

My parents have some largish kitchen knives from Sam's club. I have no idea what steel they use, but they have large white molded plastic handles that are a "hand full". They were located with the restaurant service stuff, and were relatively cheap, might be worth looking at.

Sounds like you may want to pose this question at the Makers forum. They can get you exactly what you want, and most are quite reasonable in price. You'd have to ask around. I dont know who specializes in kitchen knives over there.

Anza knives have very thick handles. If they don't have a kitchen knife in their regular product lineup, they'd probably be happy to make one just for you, and to your specs.

Good Luck,

Our knives have full size handles in black paper micarta. The K3 is the most popular with ladies, although there is a run on julienne paring knives at the moment and I will be putting handles on 4 tomorrow!

We have a new knife which we are affectionately calling the 'Tadpole Knife'. 1/16" blade stock in 440C, the shape of a small fish filleting knife with either a micarta or cocobolo bulbous shaped handle that has 'palm swell' and is oval to resist twisting. I have one of those to shape tomorrow too!

Shoot me an e-mail if you would like a picture?

I am a fully qualified and time-served chef by the way, just currently helping out at Tichbourne Knives and learning how they are made.

Thanks, everyone, for your inputs.

We found some knives my wife LOVES. They are made by Anolon - come in lots of different styles. Both Ross and Marshalls are selling them at great discounts.

Handles are thick and rubberized.
