Does anyone here know how thick the older early Sebenza handles were compared to the new ones? I am going to start hitting the knife shows hard and I am taking my micrometer to make sure if I find an old one its truly an old one I am looking for a 1987 to 1995 or so Sebenza for my collection what should I look for? I collect mostly fixed blade Chris Reeve Knives.

Thanks

Josh

There's a date stamped on the inside on the face of each slab. The numbers should more or less tell you when the knife was made.

Ok I did not know if the old ones had that or not im hoping to find an "H" sebenza one day if they even exist. Anyone here got one?

I just lucked into a old school small "P" Sebenza. They only made them from 93 to 94 so it was made sometime in that area. I can't be sure because I don't have the birthday card and back then apparently they didn't put date stamps on the inside of the scale. The ti slabs are definately thicker than my small classic, when I get home tomorrow I'll pull out the micrometer and measure the difference for ya.

Thx alot! yea I saw a 1996 sebenza go on ebay today for 350 I missed it by seconds

I missed it also. I asked him a question at 2:30am and he responded at like 4am. I fell asleep right after I emailed him, when I woke up, it has just sold. I should have just paid the $400 for it. Thats what we get trying to save a buck !!!

Sorry guys, but I was the winner on that auction for 350.00. I first offered 300.00 but no luck, then 325.00 and she counter with 350 so I bought it. I will see when it arrives if it has any marks on it and if it is clean, sometimes it is hard to tell by the pictures. It did have the original lanyard on it which is a good sign. Usually I'm the one that always tries to get it at a lower price and end up losing it. I'm a fan of the old school sebenza.

tomhalv,

Would would you mind posting pics when you receive your knife?

Thanks,
David

Well I pulled out my digital micrometer tonight and measured the thickness of the titanium slabs of both my 93-94 small P model clipless Sebenza and my 08 small classic micarta Sebenza and was quite surprised at my findings. It turns out that they are nearly identical in their measurements with the newer classic at .121" and the old school P model at .123".

I would be curious to hear of other people that measured theirs too because I've always heard that the old Sebenzas had much thicker titanium than the new ones. In spending some time examining both today I came to the conclusion that that may just be a sort of "urban legend". I found that the old Sebenza was chamfered on only the outside edge and the inside edge was left at a near 90 degree angle. On the newer sebenzas the titanium slabs are chamfered on both the inside and outside so when looking down on the two side by side it looks like the P model is thicker but in reality its just that it shows more flat surface without the chamfering on both sides of each slab.

I hope that all makes sense, but I thought that was very interesting.

Interesting I hope more people can mesure theirs I really wonder about the early H marked ones now. Anyone here have one?

I've been casting around for a Large Regular Seb in good nick for quite some time now. There is a dealer here in SA who has a new one but he's asking a stupid amount of money for it. I saw another new one sell for $450 the other day.

I sure wish they would re-issue it. Isn't there an anniversary coming up or anything?

Wow high price in SA but I guess getting the knife to you is half the battle I wonder what kinda cool old chris reeve, bauchop, and angus arbuckle knives are still floating around in the markets there maybe time for a vacation

Its not the shipping so much as the duty plus dealer mark-up. Mainly mark-up I would suspect. Those knives must have been sitting there for years...

Ya man thats pretty steep. As Safetyman declared above, Chris definately does not want his dealers to mark his knives up and, I believe, that they could be dropped if they are an authorized dealer for such an offense. Not that I'm advocating that you report them, but thats some bullcrap for sure.
