Last night, my son's friend spent the night at the house. We had grilled some pork chops and chicken, while telling adventure stories. Once the evenings movies and popcorn were all gone, everyone retired for the evening. The Mrs. and I stayed awake until about 1:30 and made sure both kids were soundly asleep, then we were able to dose off.

I awoke about 3:30ish to a sound like a door closing. My immediate reaction was to grab the G17w/light and clear the house. We don't live in a bad area, and have never had any trouble before. So not wanting to possibly scare the crap out of a wandering kid who's a guest in our house, I decided to sit still and listen for a bit. I heard nothing else, so we just got up and checked on the boys. We couldn't hear or see any other trouble so we went back to bed.

Once the neighborhood woke up today, we started seeing police cars all over the place. It turns out that 10 houses were broken into. One vehicle was stolen as well as 4 guns, a bunch of knives, GPSs, and so on.

I'm so pissed right now...they got me for a G26, GPS, and a couple of knives. I was a dumb ass and forgot to lock my truck. Right now I'm sitting here kicking myself for not getting my ass up and clearing the house like I should have. It could have been worse and I was worried about hurting or scaring our guest. Honestly I thought he'd gotten up to use the bathroom and we'd just heard him getting back in bed.

Good thing is, the police say that these jackasses tried to use a stolen card at Walmart about 5:00AM. They are on video, and they drove their own car to the Walmart, not the one they stole from the neighborhood.

Anyway, I know this isn't a knife or survival related, but it should be a good reminder to you all that anything can happen at any time. I should have gotten up and looked just in case. We got lucky they weren't after more.

Sorry about the off topic Jeff, but I feel the need to put this out there.

Hope these pieces of s#it get whats coming to them. And sorry to hear about the loss, it's the worst feeling getting something stolen.

Brotha that sucks bigtime. What knives did they yank from ya? I've got an extra GPS if you need one.

That really sucks ...but at least they seem to be pretty stupid. The sooner they are caught the more of your stuff will be back.

Blows! Wonder what would have happened if you had cleared that house and found some guy. Haha, some one would be in a world of hurt I think.

I feel your pain my friend.

The Mrs. and I had a fairly rude awakening shortly after moving here to Texas. We moved here from a town where her father was a detective and her cousin a patrolman. Everyone knew us and alot of the time there was a police car parked in our driveway. Her dad, cousin and the other cops always knew our house was good for a cup of coffee, a pee break or a meal.

We lived on a main road and with the frequent police activity most of the local scum knew better than to bother with us.

Fast forward and we've been living in Tx for a little over a year, our car has been broken into a few times, GPS stolen, the hub covers on my Trailblazer are gone, the glock now lives loaded near the bed and a shotgun not too far away, the fence gates, cars, garage and doors to the house get locked before sundown and the kids don't go outside after dark.

Sign of the times as far as I'm concerned. We live in a decent, middle class 'hood but the crime is slowly moving in.

I service multi million dollar homes for a living and I'm hearing more and more stories about break in's, stolen lawn ornaments, even an air conditioner unit on a guys garage being taken in the night.

Sorry to hear about your loss John. Use it as a lesson and you lessen it's impact.

Glad it came out okay. Hope you get your stuff back. Was your house unlocked? I can remember when I was a kid (not that long ago!) locking your doors to your house was almost unheard of. Not any more. We live in a very small town and I still lock the doors and keep a handgun on me or near me basically 24/7.

I live in a pretty quiet area, very little crime to be heard of. But every time a robbery happens it's someone who never could imagine it. Last guy had his guns in his gun safe, but it wasn't locked. That and people who have a nice gun safe but only have it locked with the universal stamped key and not the combonation never made sense.

Be safe!
