Thin Fixed Blade

Looking for a thin (1/8" or less) fixed blade in the 3"-3 1/2" range for EDC general usage. Any suggestions?

ESEE-3. I have been beating the hell out of mine around the house, in the garden, and anything else that I need to do with it. It holds up well, and has the highest level of warranty available.

Mora's are very popular, we have two in the shop at work, you will barely feel the cost of the knife, and the performance makes it a high value knife.

JN01, what are you going to do with the knife? How much are you willing to spend?

If you don't provide some feedback on the current suggestions this could get lengthy and have many suggestions that don't fit your unspoken criteria.

The knife would be used primarily for general utility. I carry a handgun for self defense, and state law prohibits carrying a blade for purposes other than a tool, so it shouldn't be an obviously weapon oriented design (i.e. double edge daggers, etched with combat oriented names/logos, etc).

For utility uses, I prefer a thin blade which slices better. I hate all the smallish knives out there made from 1/4" stock.

The ESEE-3 and Street Beat appeal to me, though I wouldn't mind something with nicely figured wood scales either.

Production or custom, carbon or stainless, either are good. I don't NEED to spend a lot, but up to around $250 is doable.

With a budget, you have the ability to go to a custom maker like ray laconico and get something very nice and clean that is as thin as you want it, just the right size, steel of your choice, and other things like this. you probably could not get a s90v balisong for the price, but a basic fixed blade would probably be very doable. besides, you get something that you like, not something that you live with.

Maybe look at the Case Desk Knife series... pretty classy looking Wharncliffe blades made of 154CM and available in different handle materials (price will vary depending on the handle material you choose.)

Yeah Ray Laconico makes some awesome stuff.

I like my Spyderco Bill Moran Featherweight, though I'm not 100% sure the blade is 3.5" or less(probably not). Though the blade stock does seem to be a bit on the thin side when putting it next to my Para2. Not sure the FRN handles with Kraton inserts would appeal to you though. Another suggestion would be getting a custom from Phil Wilson if price is no object. His blades are ground phenomenally thin and slices like a top quality Japanese Chef's Knife, but in a much smaller package.

Since your budget is up to $250 I'd suggest checking out the For Sale: Fixed Blades section on here and looking at the work from various makers. Find one whose work you like and shoot him an email.

I don't mean to be a stickler here...

However, if the police were looking at a knife you had with a logo such as the ESEE's do you think they wouldn't see that as a weapon? Maybe it's just my perspective, but the ESEE line up definitely seems like one that could be taken as a weapon.

+1

250 will get ya somethin really nice..

Look at Fiddleback Forge, Bruce Culberson, Scott Grossman, Ban Tang, and the others mentioned above. If you can't find the perfect knife, many of the makers here can work with you. For $250 you will have lots of choices.
Bark River is another semi-custom choice. They have several EDC type designs that come with pretty nice leather, and look traditional if not classy. They have one call the City Knife that looks great. Just depends on your tastes and steel choices.

I would suggest the Spydie Moran. Lots fo choices. Nice light little blade in VG-10. But with a budget of $250, you have a great range of choices from production to custom.

Here is my Bark River 'Huntsman', along with a River Rock 2 x AAA LED light and a KSF pouch:

The knife alone carries well in it's included sheath. It's convex edge is deceptive - as is it's 3.25" A-2 blade. It's not thin - .187" at the spine & tang. Very useful for it's size, although it's black Micarta grip is barely large enough for comfortable use in my medium+ sized hands. My first Barkie, I started 'right' - with their least-expensive variant - in Micarta - great look/feel - user! They have gone up a bit: ~$140 shipped now. More in fancier handles.
