Don't get me wrong, I love G-shocks. They are extremely tough watches at a decent price. They are my prefered watch to wear when I'm in uniform. I do have a few things that I don't like:

  • Too much clutter on the face. Those LCD blips ticking off each second is useless. Just give me a bigger numerals.
  • Too thick. I lnow they are super tough shock resistant, but can't they be just a tad thinner? I would like to be able to wear one witrh a long sleeved uniform shirt.
  • Lets stick with a screw-in case back. I know that the new standard flat back with four screws is more than sufficient, but the screw-in caseback inspires confidence.

Like I said, I really like G-shocks. They are my choice while in uniform, unless I'm in long sleeves and then they wont fit.

1. I agree 100%...That's why I like my old model DW-6600 the best...Not too much clutter, but it STILL looks pretty cool, and even with my 49 year-old eyes, I can still tell what time it is.:).
2. I like the thickness myself as I like BIG watches...Why not move the buttons out a little on the one sleeve of your uniform shirts?
3. Again, I agree 100%...The screw-in back does seem to be more efficient (no small screws to lose or strip-out), and probably provides a more trustworthy seal.

Not limited to G Shock, the digital display. My eyes are aging and I have to wear glasses now, I absolutely can't read the dial without them. I have a combo analog/digital now and am planning to restore the Croton I got when I was 12 cause I can see the time regardless of where my glasses are.
I'm also getting to where I prefer thinner watches that don't hang up on long sleeves.
Of course I went from shooting autos back to revolvers too, so maybe I'm just getting nostalgic.

I think there is something tongue in cheek about the over the top size and watch face silliness in a G-shock. In fact I think there is something distinctly SE Asian about them, like a Jackie Chan film.

When I look at mine I flash straight back to the first Mission Impossible. So It's not checking how long until the football is on TV - it's checking how long I've got to capture that coded computer disk and SAVE THE WORLD!. In fact a G-Shock that played a few notes from the MI theme every time you looked at it would be a winner.:p

I like the old square face model with big numerals as well. But I can't resist the huge brown and gold one I've got with the Xamacia (whatever that means) logo that shows up behind the back light. It has an almost inch wide double nylon strap that is secured by a dog clip. It's absurd - I love it.

One more thing that I don't like....

I would like to see springbars in 18mm or 20mm so the bands can be switched to something else, like maybe a Rhino band, etc. The 16mm springbars that are standard on G-shocks don't allow for much options.

I recommend you try the Timex i-Control Expedition. I now wear bifocals but I prefer the precision of digital watches. Could no longer read the display on any of them. Until I found the Expedition. Nice big display. Very easy to set. No tiny-ass buttons to fumble with. Just twist the bezel, work the stem, and you are set. Push the stem in to read the display at night. I can read it without my glasses should I wake in the middle of the night. Classy leather strap. It is now my watch of choice.

I had four G-Shocks at one time. Out of curiosity, I opened them up and found that they all had the same guts. They had different displays, but you could pop the guts from one case into another.

Personally I love G-Shocks. When I wear long sleeves, it's usually a nice enough occasion to wear my Omega.
